Why are CPU's measured in Hz?

Hertz is a frequency, i.e. how often something occurs in a second.

In CPU context, it refers to the switching frequency of the transistors within the chip.

Thank you, it is just that I have been doing about the electromagnetic spectrum in Physics and then found out that they were measured in Hz.

I then thought: 'What has the electromagnetic spectrum got to do with CPU's?' and knew the guys at Overclockers would know. :)

Hertz is just a measure of frequency. You can measure any frequency you like in Hertz, the EM spectrum is just one example.

As already mentioned, the "frequency" of a CPU is the frequency of the clock pulse which switches the transistors within the chip.

There's loads of stuff you can measure in Hz.
45RPM records spin at 0.75Hz
Remember those games where you had to mash keys on the keyboard as fast as possible? I guesstimate my mashing was about 20Hz
Potato masher moves at about 3Hz when I mash
The rate at which I shovel the mash into my mouth with a fork is about 0.5Hz :)
I sleep off my big mash dinner at a rate of 11.6 micro Hz (once a day). As a baby, that was probably a much higher clock rate :D

Hmm, okay.

So when I polish my shoes for Air Cadets I scrub at 5-10Hz,
At Air Cadets I march at around 2Hz,
Then we practice with radios, transmitting at hundreds of MHz,
Then when I come home I sleep and snore at around 0.4Hz, :)
The sound waves created by my snoring are probably at 50-100Hz,

You could go on forever really. ;)

I love the way tha this thread has changed from a curiosity into a string of funny comments.

OrphanBoy, I loved your pun :D

Probably that you could choose the best price/performance CPU without having to do so much research.

Exactly that! The product number or main selling point of a CPU was the MHz, pretty much until AMD decided their Athlons should stop being numbered on clockspeed. We now have odd numbers that bear no resemblance to any demonstrable single factor of the CPU: AMD X2 6000, Intel Q6600 etc. We have to think about FSB and cache size and architecture and socket and all sorts of other things. It used to be: "I'm replacing my 1Ghz with a 1.5GHz." I miss those days!
