Why are games so depressing?

Its funny but I always think this about music, rose tinted it may be but I always recall most relationship songs in the 70s and 80s being about falling in love and most songs today seem to be about break ups. Maybe we're just a much more negative society today than we were in the 70s and 80s :)

None of the music I listen to is about relationships or love, so I'm unsure about this trend. I do remember hearing at some point in the news that Taylor Swift sang songs about relationships but Taylor swifts music is pure horse manure so who knows

Cant beat a good love song to make you feel good :D

I think it's to do with how the human mind works. The same way in which when a customer has a bad experience they supposedly tell 10 other people, in comparison to telling 1 of a good experience. We are wired to be more emotionally receptive to bad events, news and experiences. It's the same in art, music, film and hence games. It captures more imagination in some ways and is easier to create stories with dark feelings of fear, loss, pain. These themes in games are also linked with one of the most strong feeling we as humans have; survival. So the storylines tend to edge towards survival as a theme, which in turn comes with having to kill.

Now imagine a game where you're already rich. You're surrounded by money, women, fast cars. There would be less to "do" and achieve as such. It's harder to write engaging stories for such scenarios imo.

op you are aware there are lots of different types of pc games out there? you don't need to play games based in 'dark depressing worlds' if that isn't your thing.
