Why are games so depressing?

Its funny but I always think this about music, rose tinted it may be but I always recall most relationship songs in the 70s and 80s being about falling in love and most songs today seem to be about break ups. Maybe we're just a much more negative society today than we were in the 70s and 80s :)

I think you're onto something there, goes further back to the 50s and 60s I'd say. If you listen to the pop music from those days, it's a lot more optimistic, naive and innocent I'd say. Now it's a lot more about money and narcissism, which accurately eflects of the values of modern society (such as it is).
