Why are illuminated globes so expensive?

Like... anything 30cm, sure, £30 from Rymans or whatever. Great.

50cm? John Lewis wants £500.

81cm? £12,500 from Just Globes.

Why is the scaling on this so terrible?

Probably something like the 30cm version is a "standard" and anything larger is more specialised.
There is also going to be an element of the space they take up for the value, and how hard they are to make or the number of them that are damaged in transit which i suspect will get a lot higher in relation to the number for larger ones.

Isn't the same true of most things sold?

Look at large TV's....

97 inch 4k LG OLED has a rrp of just under £25,000

A 77 inch can be had for under £2,000
