I'm absolutely fuming right now!
Back in October last year my Discovery was crashed into by a Merc Sprinter whilst it was parked up and was consequently shoved about 100 feet uphill and rolled onto it's roof and into a taxi rank. The driver was taken to hospital with a broken jaw.
First I knew of this was in the morning when I got back from my night shift to find the police loading it onto a recovery truck. The police told me what happened and gave me the driver's details and his registration (this is the key bit obviously.)
Now using these details I got hold of my insurance company, More Than who told me because I was TPFT I had to deal with it myself, so they gave me the insurance info of the person who hit me using the reg and details I passed onto them.
So I get onto NIG insurance who were actually very very helpful and they said they'd get it all sorted as it was obviously their insured's fault. They then contacted me a few days later and said their insured didn't know anything about the accident and reckoned his van was sitting outside his house. I said well that's impossible since I saw the van smashed to pieces being hauled off to the recovery yard. So since I had all the details of their driver they assumed he was lying and had my vehicle collected from the recovery yard and taken to their yard for inspection.
What they said concerned me a little so I got in touch with the police who were handling the police report and they confirmed all the details I had were correct and that they were waiting for the driver to produce his documents as they were possibly going to prosecute him for careless driving. They said they'd give it 28 days for him to produce and see what they were going to do.
I kept More Than informed of the status of what was happening all the time in case for some reason it'd somehow come back and bite me in the arse.
So fast forward nearly 28 days and I get a call from the police, the driver had produced his documents and it turns out it was a completely different person to the one I had been chasing, he also had a Merc Sprinter with almost the exact same registration bar one digit! The police on site at the crash had written it down wrong and when they used the computer to check the details a Merc Sprinter obviously came up and they took the details of the driver for that vehicle, which was given to me.
Now I didn't know what the hell to do so I checked my insurance policy and I did in fact have legal cover so I got on the phone to More Than who passed me to their crack legal helpline based in India. They had the details of the claim and then I had to try and explain to them that the van registration was wrong, which was no easy task, it took me about 30 minutes of shouting. I asked for the number of a solicitor that More Than used in the UK and then called them directly.
The solicitor's were quite helpful and I wrote them a long winded letter like this post so far explaining and they got in touch with the correct insurance company and started to sort the claim out. It was now December so I thought it'd be sorted out quite quickly, Equity insurance who were the correct company really dragged their feet so I finally got the claim settled in March plus a loss of use claim too for them taking so bloody long.
Just to further highlight More Than's incompetence I got a letter from them asking if I wanted to renew my insurance a couple of week's ago, "yeah sure for my vehicle that is probably now a cube".
This brings me to today, I get a letter from NIG, who everyone thought were the insurance company originally responsible, the letter opened with something along the lines of "We have been trying to deal directly with your insurance company to be reimbursed for our outlay, it is unfortunate that we now have to contact you as we have had no response from your insurer".
The amount they want off me is £1100, that's only slightly less than what I was given from the claim! I am so ****** off with More Than right now, NIG must have been chasing them for months, I've been given 14 days to pay More Than can **** right off if they think I'm going to pay NIG out of my own pocket, as far as I'm concerned I think More Than should pay it and then they can sue the bloody police as far as I'm concerned.
I mean why the hell should I be less a vehicle and out of pocket for everyone else's incompetence.
Sorry for the long rant but as I said I had to get it off my chest!
