Why Are Some People So Dumb?

People will alwaspys want to push, from what I understand some are going as high as they can just to say they have done it and then dropping to a more reasonable ghz

Why risk killing the chip? They have been given advice on what are safe voltages and are going higher. There will be lots of tears when they fry their chips. More fool them.

It's there pc and they have paid for it,up to them what they do.
True, but the problem is that thread is trying to encourage people to do the same and risk killing their CPU...since there's no warning on safe voltage or declaration of "try it at your own risk" whatsoever.

And their so-called "5GHz overclock" is not even prime stable, so what's the point except for bragging right?

I think you've answered your own question, bragging rights.

If people want to overclock their cpu fine best of luck to them, they know the score and most know what they're doing there's nowt wrong with pushing the limits i take my hat off to those that do :)

I brought this chip to have fun, and to me fun is benchmarking. I know and accept the risks as do many others on the forum.

There are many levels of overclocking. Here they mainly fall into two types: like me that want to get the best benchmarks they can, those that want a safe extra bit of speed.

So chill a little and just enjoy seeing some nutter go mad LOL.

This is the "Overclockers" forum

Not sure if you've been following the Sandybridge thread, but the chip's design has been confirmed being unable to withstand beyond 1.38vcore. While it might not kill the chip right away going beyond that, but it WILL kill the chip...and it's just the matter of time.

People do overclock the SandyBridge chip, but they do it following the safety guideline provided by Gibbo, not ignore it like an idiot who thinks he knows better. If that guy's chip does die due to his ignorance and he bought his chip from OcUK, I would really feel sorry for OcUK to have to deal with his RMA.

I am up to speed on it and so are the guys posting in that thread, they're not doing this blind. Enthusiasts always push their equipment to the limit and sometimes past it, taking risks is part of the enjoyment.

Plus if other people didn't push it and find the limits how would everyone else know what they are?

And Gibbo said OCUK wouldn't ask questions about RMA'd chips anyway.

True, but chips in the pass we know we won't kill it as long as we keep the temp under control, but for the SandyBridge it's different, and it is KNOWN to be extreme weak against high voltage.

Normally I'm all for the "the etailer can't prove the chip has been overclocked so they have to honour their warranty terms", but these guys are really abusing it because they know they have warranty to fall back to should their chip die, they would be like "oops, guess I killed the chip. RMA time for my next chip to get abused".

While etailer would probably just send the chip back to Intel for replacement and they don't lose much in terms of money in that part, the extra paperwork etc does however add to the admin costs, so I don't think it is fair that the etailor has to pay out of their own pocket for dealing with the RMA for the sake of peoples' reckless acts...

I agree with one of the above posters, they've paid for it so let em fry their chips if they want as they HAVE been warned. I must admit if I'd gotten one and had been warned about the safe voltages I wouldn't go over it coz I just don't have the money to replace the chip at those prices... guesss some people do :O
