Yes there are a few out there, Battlefront, the Jedi Knight series, Lego Star Wars, Empire at War and KotOR, but there's a similarity to all these Star Wars titles, they ALL avoid how the actual film goes....let me explain.

I would like to see a game where you play from episode 1, all the way to episode 6 as different characters, exactly how Lego Star Wars is done but with more realism. I would love to get out a high polygon lightsabre and slice through droids and troopers with amazing graphics in a third person view. This game, if done well like Lego Star Wars as in following the story, would be such a massive hit.

So far we've had lego versions of star wars, RTS versions, RPG versions, and versions which go onto a completely different story! Don't get me wrong, everyone one of them were really amazing games, especially the lego star wars games, but they didn't quite hit that spot for me.

Is there some sort of license as to why someone can't design a realistic Star Wars game?

And secondly, there is no decent pod racing game!!! What!!!??! Pod racing is one of the most genius racing sports ever created, just imagine going hundreds of miles an hour pulled by two massive hovering engines across huge landscapes trying to dodge rocks and the odd Tuscan Raider. I know there was an N64 version done, but damn that was POOR. Graphics were terrible, controls even worse and gameplay nothing special. If it were to be redesigned today it would be one of the best racing games out for people who love their arcade style racing games, especially online.

What do you think about this? Would you like to see these titles, or am i missing something here because i really don't understand why they've not been made yet.

I'd rather have games from the expanded universe, as you generally get far better stories out of them.

There is a next generation Star Wars title in development that hopefully will live up to our expectations, but I'm not counting on anything that amazing, as it could be a clunky console game that feels horrid.

Jedi Knight II is probably the best overall action Star Wars game, it has some dismemberment, a fantastic engrossing story, and the lightsabre duels are pretty damn fun too.

Then we have Knights of the Old Republic I and II, probably the best story Star Wars has seen next to the original trilogy. My god the prequels were pants for story.

If the rumors I've read about KOTOR III are true regarding combat, it could be quite interesting, as it may turn out to be more like Jade Empire real time combat instead of dungeons and dragons turn based battles. Also it'll be a next generation game, meaning it should also look pretty damn good too.

Personally I wouldn't want a game based directly on the Story of the films, as it'll go into random things that didn't actually happen and will just be rather horrid. Look at Episode One, my god.

I think the main reason is that games which follow movie scripts to the letter are almost universally poor, and have been since the 80s.

I actually think Lucasarts have done pretty well, in that they have taken the StarWars 'franchise' and created a wide range of diverse games from it, in that universe. I can't really think of any of any other films which have managed to create quite so many successful (and different) games.

Lets not forget that copying the Episode1-6 timeline would mean that the plot would be nothing new to many players - you wouldn't get the same fantastic storytelling experience present in KOTOR for example.

True, although why havn't we seen really good 3rd person light sabre duals between well known characters like darth vader and luke skywalker and decent fights? I don't think i've seen a decent battle yet. Closest ive come to a good fight is against darth vader in lego star wars :p That was pretty fun.

Star Wars Arcade, that's got a pretty good Darth Vader fight in it :p

I'm just hoping the Wii has a Star Wars lightsabre game for it in the future :D

I don't like Star Wars (that much, its ok), but I LOVE Star Wars games :) Its quite odd that the Star Wars universe lends itself so well to interactive games. They're very immersive, with great stories, and great replayability - even if its just because lightsabers are cool ;)

I'm really glad they don't make many games based on the actual movies, as it would really limit what could be done both gameplay and story wise. I think with games like KOTOR, battlefrount, DF/JK/whatever they rename the series too next, lego star wars and x-wing/tie fighter star wars in general has had an excellent run of games all of which have really benefited from doing things a little differently from the movies. The only thing that seems to be lacking is a game allowing you to be a jedi and really take advantage of all the powers they have, with all work being down on physics and interactivity in games at the moment I don't think this is far away.

just wait for some sort of jedi knight game on the wii using the wiimote :D

i think if games kept being based on the main storyline, it would get very dull as theres already quite a few games based around parts of it.

I really loved Kotor and Kotor2 because it was different star wars, not saying the old is bad but its nice to stretch out into that huge universe. All we need is Kotor3 to be proper real time fighting.

Take Star Wars itself for example - you'd have quite an uneven and disjointed game if you tried to follow the story too slavishly. Using the action sequences as they appear :

1- guide your tottering droid to the escape pod.

2 - Search the desert for your missing droid. Fight some sandpeople.

3 - Escape Tatooine in your ship

4 - run around the death star freeing princesses and disabling tractor beams

5 - Attack the death star in your xwing.

It jumps all over the place from character to character, from genre to genre and you're never in any doubt what is going to happen next. Much better to have new character and weave a story parallel to events in the film, which leaves some room for surprises and innovation. Much like the x-wing games did.

Most of the games fall under the extended universe, that's why. George Lucas wants the games, books, etc. to tell the rest of the story we don't see in the movies.
