Why are we getting such bad ports?

BC2 is perfectly fine for me and I technically have bellow the minimum specs. Only reason I ever stopped playing was the gustav spam that turned the game into just a noob fest with no skill involved. The game itself ran perfectly fine though.

Developers invariably concentrate on consoles more, unfortunately that's the way it is now. It will be interesting to see what transpires when the next xbox / ps is released.

Why ports?

Because the Console market is where the money is.

Why bad ports?

Because the main consoles (wii, ps, xbox) = 3 discreet hardware sets. PC = infinite hardware sets. PC market = enthusiast market = they will buy it anyway.

Its kind of an ironic cycle, success on the PC platform means assimilation onto the console domain, which means crippling death on the PC platform.

So, if you play a game on the PC and its the best thing ever, keep it a secret ;)

Agree with all of that except for "they will buy it anyway.", I am still playing good ol' BF2 from 2005 and have not bought a ported games for years.

Maybe the PC gaming market is too small to worry about for people like EA?, but there must be enough money for others to care?.

If not I guess its join the hordes of console noobs or find another hobby.. I know which one I will choose..

i find it ironic, they need decent pc's to create these games lol. yet it runs smoother on a cruddy console.

if im honest, bit by bit slowly the pc gamers are all getting annoyed its coming out now and you can see it.

I just hope motion sensor hardware is the consoles downfall, devs wont find that interesting.

Its all down to:

1: PC gaming does not sell as many copies as other formats in general. So less interest to make PC games decent when consoles sell more games & will accept any crap fed to them as they have no choice. PC has a rich catalog & even now some 5 year old games on PC offer a much better experience. Thinks like Splinter Cell3 & Far Cry1 look way better than many recent PC games

2: Developers are lazy *******

3: Publishers are greedy & PC is lowdown the list of platforms they want to support.

4: PC gaming is more demanding & takes more effort to support the various hardware. DirectX was supposed to do this but obviously ATI/Nvidia/other hardware manufacturers do not stick to WHQL specs do they!

Cannot see it changing ever again as nowadays the norm is poor ports & forced DLC to get the product you originally bought at full price (or thought you did as they always cut out features then make them DLC but deny this obviously when you can see its true).

Not read it all but please stop blaming it on devs, we - they have no choice over if a version of a project will be ported or a stand alone version will be produced.

If there is the option for it to be ported it will be, simple. Even if its not a straight port but its on multiple platforms expect most of the project to be pushed across.

Sorry to say after crunching for up to a year Dev's will be at the point of not caring any ways. I would take the option to port something instead of signing my life away for yet another iteration.

It's not just PC's that suffer from porting, all platforms do depending on where the project started.

I have gone from DS, PS2 > PSP > Wii back down to PSP and then they decided they wanted a ps3, 360 version. License holders and publishers choice late on with dev's pulling their hair out.

Publishers, license holders set deadlines and requests.

Why bother taking the time to do a good port when the same people will settle for a crap port, moan about it, then buy the next game like the bunch of morons that they are?

Any evidence? If you witnessed how much time and hard work that goes into getting one working iteration of a project you would think twice.
Whatever thats what they get paid for! I mean all games nowadays are made on PC's anyway. The only time consuming element is the ATI/Nvidia code translation from console level hardware to PC. The rest is handled by developer tools which translate the code between platforms.

Fact: PC games used to ship finished & almost bug free. It was unheard of for games to ship with game breaking bugs.

Nowadays it unheard of for PC games to ship in a working state for the masses it seems

Only reason they ship PC games in such a mess is because they know they can fix it & people can download the patch. Years ago they did not have this option so had to concentrate on getting it right before shipping.

Hence lazy developers is correct. Who cares how hard it is for them they make massive money when the game sells well.

This is pretty much it.

You make a crap port, people buy it. They will even buy the next one you release. Therefore there is no point making a good port as your aren't really damaging your future sales.

How does mouse lag manifest itself? I find in some games the mouse seems to float about in the menus as if it's going through treacle or something.

I always thought that was when someone had set the game video settings (like AA) too high. If I do that for the odd game, with 8xAA on a demanding title for example, it does give the slower, floating movement when using the mouse. Title / rig depending of course.

Okay, so I am lazy when I am given the task from working on a port that we are set to do by your publisher/license holders and it doesn't meet your standards. Your totally ignoring my point that the industry dev's work very hard on these projects but due to publishers/management dates and milestones have to be met. It's very naive to call the whole industry lazy because a patch has to be released to fix bugs. I guarantee not a single game will go to master without bugs and I am talking Nintendo carts that have no patching available.

The only time consuming element.... First hand experience? seriously look into game development

Yet again do some research its not uncommon for bugs to be allowed to pass through to let the master hit its deadline. Please source reference for all your claims as your just pulling this out of thin air right now.

Finally, yes this is true for all platforms connected to a network to meet Master deadlines. The amount the publisher and the user demands of the product means deadlines are much tighter so meet allotted shelf time bugs will be continually fixed after master. Hey if we all had the backing of blizzard, valve we could say it's ready when it's ready but this big bucks to publishers and they are not going to miss their Christmas slot.

Hence lazy developers is correct. Who cares how hard it is for them they make massive money when the game sells well.

Get my point yet? DEVELOPERS have no control over target sales, milestones, demands, culling of features (to make deadlines set by publishers) we work very hard within given times to meet targets.

One more thing, dev's don't make 'massive money', management and publishers do ;)
