Why can I not go higher in multiplyer without fail?

Hey guys!

I am new here and I need some help with my overclocking :rolleyes:

I am trying to OC my rather old i5 2500k cpu on my GB Z68XP-UDP3 (BIOS F10) and in relation herewith I have been following THIS as a guideline for my own OCing.

I know that the CPUs are different, but nonetheless I am curious of why I cannot go higher that x42 in the multiplyer, following roughly the same settings as sceenshots on page 3 by "krose".

The major difference between his and mine settings is, that I have PWM Frequencies on [AUTO] as well as CPU Over Current Protection [AUTO].
My RAM settings is also very similar; I got DRAM timing on AUTO and the rest is the same.

So here is the problem: My voltage settings are DVID +0.005, QPR/TT 1.075 - the rest is the same.

However, when I read my CPU-Z vcore during load, I get a 1.272v, unlike his 1.284. And if I just go to DVID +0.000, the system becomes unstable (one of the cores will shutdown during the p95 test), but becomes perfectly stable on +0.005.

Is the cpu difference really that great? That I have to run DVID +0.005 to get stable at x42, while he can do DVID -0.015 and get stable at x43.

I don't get it! :confused:

Please cast some light upon this matter :D
 
Yeah like David asked, what cooler are you using? If you are on Stock then forget it. You should easily hit 4.5ghz ( or more ) on that CPU as long as you have the right settings dialed in. Have you tried overclocking with a set voltage, rather than use offset?

because each cpu will be different in how much voltage it needs for each overclock

some need more some need less voltage
 
lol yeah

each oc guide is basically a rough estimate,it will all depend on the chip you have

if you want to oc higher then 42x just use more dvid until your stable so 43x multi and +0.010v dvid and so on

I am using a freshly installed CM Hyper 212 evo - but temperatures does not seem to be the issue (although they are a bit high as I only have a single intake fan).

I tried overclocking it the "normal" way to 4.5 ghz using vcore settings and multi-step load-line, but I felt that the voltages and thus temperatures got too high (can't really remember the settings). The idle voltages was quite high, too. Therefore I am doing it the other way.

The funny thing is, that I am able to do 40x while the DVID is set to -0.025 @stable - but it takes DVID +0.005 to do 42x? Doesn't that seem like quite a big jump for 2 more multi?
 
Yeah I suppose... :( I think Ill just keep it at 42x then - I dont think it will be worth the extra voltage going to 43x, even though I do believe I can keep the max temperature around 75-77 degrees on full load. Just not as healty I suppose :D

Maybe a better cooler would help improve the temps? I used to keep my 2600k at 4.8ghz on much higher voltage that stated but temps where always fine because the cooler was good.
