Why can't I control volume under OS X using my MB remote when using external speakers

As title... I use my Macbook with some external speakers (Creative inspire 5.1) connected via Optical out.

When playing music in iTunes, I can adjust the volume by using the dial on the creative receiver, or by changing the iTunes volume, however when I try and use my macbook's remote - it won't change the system volume. The volume icon appears on screen but has a circle with a cross through it.

Now I assumed this was just something to do with optical or outputting to external speakers in general, however I've just realised that if I use Bootcamp and load Windows XP, the macbook remote will change the volume no problem... so what's going on then? Is there any way to get it to work properly under OS X?

In sounds and audio device properties, the 'device volume' slider moves when I use the remote. Volume in Media player stays the same. Tbh I don't care what volume setting it changes I'd just like it to change something under OS X.

*edit, maybe that's the wave volume you mentioned.*

I'll try your suggestions in a bit EVH cheers.
