Why Can't I hit FSB 400?

I constantly see people talking about FSB400-450, my bios allows upto 550, yet I can't seem to get it anywhere close?

I've given the CPU more vcore right up to 1.5v and then it only just posts but fails loading windows with BSD.

I have a feeling that to get it stable on that kind of FSB I would have to put vcore 1.6v and from what I see that seems ridiculously high, i'd fry the poor thing wouldn't I?

Is it my Mobo, I'm assuming it can't be my memory as I have decent Team Extreeme PC6400 CAS 3-3-3-8.

Something doesn'ty like 400FSB I've even dropped the multiplier down to 6 just to see if it would boot but nope same problem BSD.

What's stopping me get this coverted 400FSB? and why does my chip seem to need so much juice just to POST with that FSB? even on a low multiplier

thanks 1DMF

MCH 1.6VOLTS
ICH i set this to 1.2volts

ahh is it because I haven't changed these settings - didn't know what they were so left them!

so it's not the vcore that is the problem, what are those other settings is the chipset?, annyway i'll have a play and see how I get on, i've set the vcore to 1.4 at the moment, i'll drop to 1.35 and try the other settings.

thanks 1DMF

no good i'm afraid, will not boot no matter what.

vcore : 1.4v
RAM : 2.3v
FSB : 1.4v
MCH : 1.6v
ICH : 1.2v

I've even tried 7,8,9 multiplyer on fsb400 and changed memory to 5-5-5-15/18 the highest FSB I can get is 370 it posts then just re-boots itself as winodws starts to load.

I've even set the memory to PC6400 doesn't matter what I try it will not boot past 350FSB.

Any other suggestions?

your board/cpu/memory may not clock as high as others even with the exact same spec as you
yeah i'm beggining to think it's just my luck to get expensive value components that only like stock value settings!!

I guess I can't grumble @ 3.33ghz and 1000mhz memory CAS 4-4-4-8 , seings as I bought a 2.66ghz and 800mhz memory :D

Well none of it works for me , it will not do FSB400 and I've followed all the settings to the letter.

do you think I have a duff component, what BIOS are you using? i'm on the latest 0507.

I notice those that are hitting 400FSB are using E6600 NOT E6700 could this be a factor?

yup tried all that 1:1 (ie 800mhz) - 1.7v MCH - disabled everything, set all other settings - nothing!

starting to get bored with 3 days of booting my machine

so you think it's the CPU or Board ? thing is I am getting Overclocking boot errors when i'm not OC'ing accept set the CAS 3-3-3-8 manually, I checked the SPD and they show 400mhz as 4-3-4-9 ?

I've not tried 005 because I don't have a floppy drive and you can only downgrade your bios from DOS.

I've decided to RMA the RAM and get Cellshock PC8000 instead @ the end of the day they don't run 1:1 stock nor properly 800mhz CAS 3-3-3-8 when FSB is @ stock something is a miss, and seings as other PC6400 is cas 4-4-4-12 I might as well get PC8000 4-4-4-12 not only that they are cheaper than the Team , so hopefully I can't loose! , well watch this space , figers crossed - lol

Have you tried enabling 'configure dram timing by spd'?
sure have, the thing that bugs me is the SPD shows 3-4-3-9 and these are meant to be 3-3-3-8 , but if you have the same board and can't do it then it's not a dead cert as some seem to think hitting FSB 400 with this board.

However you say anywhere near stability, I can't even POST.

I exit the bios and just watch a black blank screen till I decide it ain t booting and have to hold the power button in till it turns off! , are you at least posting with FSB400?

yeah , bummer for me was I knew about Geil probs so steered clear of it , researched all chips for Micron D9 and settled for the Team thinking things would be OK, how wrong I was!

With manual RAM timings I just get the black screen, fans whirring with no POST. With the automatic ones it'll conk out before getting to Windows unless I use a silly vCore.
This is exactly the same only way I've got it to POST is silly vcore, I gave up.

Lets hope I can RMA my ram quickly and get the cellshock, which is the ones i've decided on also, i nearly bought them to start with, wish I had now, but I guess there are still no guarantees.

Well I've swapped my memory for Cellshock PC8000 1000mhz and nothing has changed, cant get a stable 3.66 OC let alone 400FSB, infact the memory will only run @ same speed 1050mhz as the 800mhz Team memory.

I've even tried everything on max , FSB , ICH , MCH , RAM and 4.5vcore , I must have a duff board , or something. I give up
