Why cant I play MKV and M2TS files in Ubuntu?

Hi all,

I have ubuntu 9.10 installed on my laptop and im trying to play these file types but it doesnt work. I get a message about it not been supported (Cant remember exactly and im not on it now)

I pretty sure I have installed all the required restricted codecs from mediabuntu.

Any ideas?

usually just installing mediabuntu addons should work.

i've had no trouble playing mkv files.

what are you using to play them ?

try smplayer - the version (of mplayer) in the repos should play them just fine

Try the following;

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

Or use vlc player
