Why can't I play my old games?

So it turns out the PS4 can't play any of my PS3 games.

Is there a technical/compatibility reason for this?

Or - and I'm willing to bet this is the more likely reason - is it because some **** at Sony decided to screw everyone over by not letting us play our old PS3 games deliberately on the console for profit/business reasons?

I'm really angry about this. I'm tempted to box it up and send it back to be honest.

Why would you buy a next gen console to play your old games? lol

I knew this thread would create a storm.

I don't know mate, maybe because I've spent hundreds of pounds on what turns out to be complete waste.

I have sent it back btw, my job gives me very little time to enjoy gaming and if they cannot offer a console that is backwards compatible then they can goto hell to be honest. 300 back in my account thank you. It was an ugly piece of crap anyway.

Here's a foolproof suggestion. If you want to play your old PS3 games, then why not just plug the PS3 in and use that? Should take you about two seconds. Besides, the lack of backwards compatibility has been known about for ages, with that being the case why did you bother buy one and then whine about it on the internet?

This is such an invalid argument on so many levels. Why should I have a blu-ray player that doesn't play DVDs for example. It is absolutely ridiculous. I am so furious that it turns out it isn't in fact a compatibility reason but more so some greedy corporate scum at Sony trying to screw us over. You think I'm joking, but my PS4 has been sent back to Game. They can frankly **** off. You can keep on giving them money though mate, it's your earnings.

I feel very, very strongly about this. It is unacceptable, full stop. I can't play the games I paid £50 for. Well done Sony, lose my business and I know why you will be dead in 5 years.

How would it affect their profits if you could?

And you say above that you spent hundreds of pounds on games that you now can't play. You did, I assume, also buy a ps3 to play them on?

Yes, I have my PS3 but you miss the point. This is such a stupid argument. Frankly it would make sense to have a console that enables the customer to play EVERYTHING that it can. Your argument to or against is too late because my PS4 has already gone back. It's like a new car coming out that doesn't accept our usual standard of petrol. I'm really angry about this, really really angry. Goodbye Sony you bunch of ****s

LOL OP annoyed by not doing what amounts to a 5 minute google...

He should send it back especially considering the level of stupidity shown - Id be quite embarrassed myself...

ps3ud0

LOL mate, so you spent a lot of your hard earned cash on GTA5 and now it is completely incompatible with your new console. And you are trying to mock me?????

Some of us have LIVES and decent jobs and it is pathetic to expect people to have a PS3 and a PS4.

So what happened to all your old videos when you upgraded to DVDs? Occasionally this happens. Get over it.

On a side note, I struggle to see what job would prevent you from having a PS3 and a PS4. You're still going to spend the same amount of time playing games no matter how many consoles you have, unless you have some extra hands.

Look - I see your point but WHY should you need a PS3 and a PS4, when the PS4 could do everything anyway? That's what I am getting at, what you guys are arguing is effectively like saying you should have 10 different Blu Ray players to enjoy 10 different Blu Ray movies. It stinks of inefficiency.

I think you need help :) how hard is it to understand that the architecture is completely different and the only person to blame for buying it is you, also Sony will not die in 5 years because you and some other oblivious people in this planet buy things with their eyes closed..

The whole point of this thread was to establish whether it was an issue with architecture or a corporate/strategic issue. At no point when I pre-ordered my PS4 was I made aware it wouldn't be compatible with the hundreds of pounds I had previously spent on PS3 games. I do not understand why this simple fact is causing such a storm.

Guys I apologise for the stuff I wrote last night. I was really drunk and angry.

Was it ever established whether it is a compatibility issue or not?

It's just annoying to be honest as my PS3 broke a couple of weeks ago. That might explain some of that anger last night :D
