I can seem to get my HTPC running MCE 2005 to See my XP Pro box

Both have file print sharing on.
Both have workgroup as WORKGROUP
Both have folders shared - Under view workgroups can see the individual PC computer icon shared shared... Just can't see the other pc's

I can remote desktop to each PC and log on no problems

So some sort of network connection between both is running fine.

Also both can access the internet fine.
Both have there own individual IP addesses.

Setup is one wirless and on wired to a zyxel router modem

Íve managed in the past and it was straight forward.

Any help appreciated as this doing my swede in!

Sounds like you need to disable simple file sharing- open my computer > tools > folder options > view > untick 'use simple file sharing' > click OK :) You should now be able to access the shared folders in the form of \\computername\sharename

Try pinging your xp box from the MCE machine with both IP address and host name- ie, on the MCE machine, open a CMD prompt and type:

ping 192.168.1.2 (IP address of xp box)

and

ping xpbox

then on the XP box, open a command prompt and type:

ping 192.168.1.3 (IP address of MCE machine)

and

ping mcemachine

and see what actually pings and what times out- could possibly be a DNS issue :)

Right then, you have a DNS problem- ie, you need a way of resolving internal IP addresses to hostnames. Do you have a router? If so, in the IP settings page, assuming your router supports DNS you can set the primary DNS servers IP to the router and then set the secondary to your ISP's :) If you don't have a router, now I'm not to sure on how secure this is but it should be fine (don't quote me on it :p ) but you could install DNS on one of your machines and set it to forward all unknown addresses to your ISP's address :)

Do you have any user names on either PC which have a blank password? If I remember correctly XP disables file sharing unless either:

1) The built-in Administrator account has a password

or;

2) The Administrator and all User accounts have passwords.
