why cant i watch 4k you tube on a 4770k?

Hi guys this one has bugged me for a bit but just recently come to the fore as one of my machines has been hooked up to a 4k TV.

Spec is

i7 4770k
16gb ddr3
geforce 1060ti 6gb

now im hardly expecting native 4k cyberpunk 120fps. But i cant even play a 4k video? from you tube? For ref im on gigabit WAN and LAN wired, CPU goes to 100% playing a 4k video and this is clearly what is killing the performance.

Can someone just tell me if this is normal? Im shocked an i7 that is "that" old cant even playback 4k compressed video tbh but if thats the case so be it
 
you forgot to plug in the video card i assume? either that or the browser not off loading the work for some reason... update browser to latest, try another browser, install latest nvidia drivers... also surprised CPU at 100% even if its doing the decoding.. though have to admit i not tried that.
 
Should definitely not struggle with 4k.

Just tried my workshop PC where I'm at now which has an i5-4590 and 4k youtube keeps it around 50% load.
 
The TV is connected to the nVidia card and not the motherboard output, right?
 
Sounds like you don't have appropriate codecs installed, or don't have hardware rendering enabled in browser, there are a couple you get from ms store the VP9 and HvENC they are not installed by default on win10.

You could also try another browser like Brave or something just to see if a fresh browser install works fine.
 
ok thanks guys the techy side of it isnt an issue i know what im doing plugs in right holes and what not i just didn't really have a simple frame of reference nor experience with 4k. Knowing it "should" work fine makes it well worth me spending some time on it. I did look at the hardware decoding in chrome as a first thing and it was on. GPU was at about 15-20% during the 4k playback CPU at 100. Windows 10 2004 probably recentish nvidia drivers ill let everyone know what it ended up being, oh btw i turned HDR on in windows settings and it had a bit of a "moment" but did come back and HDR said "on" theres not some known issue with HDR in windows is there? or on lower end cards like a 1060?
 
a tip for other people like me who have older generation gfx cards that dont do h.265/hevc video decoding and only support h.264, you can install addons in chrome to make youtube videos play in h.264 and then the gpu decodes it. think the addon i use in chrome is h264ify or something on those lines. that way cpu time is freed up for my other tasks where gpu handles the youtube.
