I notice quite a few threads get closed when there is no need to close them.

Extra posts in that thread won't cause resource problems with server hardware and won't in any way effect the functioning of the forum.

Sometimes it's necessary, sometimes it isn't but it happens anyway.

C'est la vie.

moderators can use their digression and do as they please with the thread. Keep it open, close it or move it for other moderators to have a look at.

Maccy just deletes things.

Threads are closed for a variety of reasons, sometimes it's because they're breaking rules, sometimes they're just spam, sometimes they're pointless, sometimes a closure is requested by the original poster and so on. There's no way to give an exhaustive list of reasons.
