Why did AMD sell off GloFo?

Looking back now it seems to me they'd be better off if they had closer control over the fabrication of their chips, both for GPUs and CPUs. What were their reasons for selling at the time?

So if anything goes wrong AMD won't be the ones to lose money. Well, I'm not exactly sure on the full details of it...

But GloFo still fabricates all their products. So if something goes wrong AMD are still shafted. The only difference is that now they don't have any control in making sure things don't go wrong.
