why disable speedstep?

most of the guides and advice i read say that i need to disable speedstep when overclocking my 2500k but however i don't see the point of having the processor run at full speed when not in use.

it seems a little counter productive, yes i have a processor running at this or that speed, but if i'm sitting in windows, i have no need to run it at full speed all the time surely?

Having speedstep enabled can introduce instability apparently. I have it enabled on my i7 920 overclock and it only changes the multiplier, the voltage and base clock are unaffected by it. If the base clock changes, and I tried doing this with Easytune my system got crashy, but did shave another 10w off idle power draw.

cheers, i've left it on and see no real reason to turn it off, it still hits full speed when i need it to and thats good enough for me.
