Why do DJs say "Shabba"?

It's some bloke from Jamaica's name isn't it? And was in some cheesy 80s/90s song which I vaguely remember.

Shabba and other such exclamations are now just used as mindless filler by mindless MCs in clubs full of out of their mind middle class freshers who think it's really cool. It is in fact indicative that your urban bard has run out of flow and has limited linguistic aptitude thereby facilitating the need to say a few "shabbas" and other such (meaningless) exclamations. Sometimes "yeee", "yeah", "bo", "uh", "brrrrrap" and "yo" are also proffered by these street poets. All equally meaningless. All equally mindless.

I blame the Tories for not making schools better in poor urban ghettos.

Do you prefer the mega-phone instead?

I'd let Dai Rodigan get away with using a mic as a DJ.... thats about it.

:p

If the producer of a track wanted there to be vocals, they would put vocals in. Nothing messes up music more than some idiot shouting for you to put your hands up or make some noise.

It's from Shabba Ranks - Mr Loverman.

People used to shout it occasionally when the song came out, early 90's.

This. It was all over for a while, Steve Wright (who was on R1 at the time) sampled it and played the 'Shabba' bit randomly in loads of songs.

Often used to see it written on walls too around the same time.
