Why do I keep phoning the emergency services?

Over the last couple of weeks I have inadvertently called the emergency services four times from my mobile phone. Once I just managed to cancel the call, but they have answered on the other occasions and I have had to embarrassingly tell them I have called in error.

I can’t fathom out what I’m doing! I’ve had the mobile phone for a couple of years and have never done it before, but now i seem to be touching something on the phone when I pick it up that activates a 999 call. Is there a shortcut anyone knows about that I might have somehow set up in error?

My old non-smartphone with push buttons did this, while locked it still registered the 9 and 1 buttons, which sometimes got pressed while phone in my shirt pocket... Very embarressing!
