Why do I not remember this game being so damn hard!

Just been playing Shadow of the Beast 2 on my Amiga 500 - its not something i remember playing much in the past but I think I know why now!

I wonder if modern gaming principles have softened me or something because for the life of me, I cannot get futher than the first few dozen enemies on the first level! One life, then like a minute to reload again right back at the beginning. No respawning, no extra lives or continues.

Its one hell of a challange. If anyone else has a copy handy give it a shot and you'll see what I mean!

Anyone else found this with some of the more vintage games?

Stand near the tree at the start. Open up chat and type in "Ten Pints" Hey Presto you are invicible.

The Shadow of the Beast series was a bit odd. They got progressively worse looking but easier play. Beast 3 being the most playable and actually doable, it wasnt a bad looking game by any stretch its just that Beast set such a graphical standard on the Amiga. The intro to Beast 2 is an Amiga legend.

Cheating is my last resort.. I'm not quite ready for that.... yet!

Trust me, its the only way you will make any progress in the game. Even with the cheat its possible to get stuck in areas and have to commit suicide.

If you want another near impossible Amiga game, try playing the original version of Project X. Getting past the end of the second level requires someting close to divine intervention. The later special edition is much easier.

It just seems that the default weapon is kinda awful. Its not very well designed and you need to get too close to the enemies and use repeat fire, by which time you get owned by the little spear chucking dudes.

The artwork and sound is class though :) Loving the Amiga right now - shame rodland stopped working :(

I didnt find the weapon too bad to be honest, i think a lot of its down to timing if i remember correctly. Sound was always a strong point in the beast games and i think they still sound fantastic today. If you can find Beast 3 give that a go as you'll find it a much easier task. In all my Amiga years i never actually played Rodland. You need to get the Chaos Engine if you dont already have it, one of the very best games on the Amiga. Superfrog is another i'd highly recommend.

I had Chaos Engine on my CD32, and I have it now on my mobile phone. I got a new Amiga from the bay with a dozen or so games so I'm catching up with some fond memories.

The SoTB 2 intro is stunning for its time - it really is :)

I'm in the processes of getting some spare parts and software from a few mates' attics!

I dont know of anyone whose jaw didnt hit the ground when they first watched the SOTB2 intro at the time. LOL look at me getting all nostalgic, may just have to fire the Amiga up as well :)

I dont think I ever saw it, I was put off by the gameplay reports. It was a Psygnosis game right, they always made the flashest games around but only lemmings was the boss.
Apparently they were born from the ashes of Imagine software, remember whacky waiters on the vic 20 :D and they ended up becoming part of the Sony megacorp empire, nifty

OMG yeah..... i remember that game. Even harder than R-TYPE ( yes i know thats hard to believe but it was!)

Project17 did that one, think they also did Alien Breed which was just awesome. All their games were something else.

I think Xenon II was my favourite though, I know it wasnt the best one really but the intro was great and I just liked the upgrade parts and alien weirdness in it

Yep Team 17, who were arguably the best softwarehouse on the Amiga.

Project X
Alien Breed Series
Body Blows Series
Superfrog
Overdrive
ATR
and others ...

Bitmap Brothers werent bad either ;)

Speedball
Speedball 2
Gods
Magic Pockets
The Chaos Engine
and others ...

Talking of SOTB2, if anyone can do an MP3 of the end-game sequence (the amazing guitar riff|rift(?)) then please let me know.

Still say that's one of the best pieces of music ever made in a game.

I can't get a fraction of the way through Battletoads on the Megadrive compared to when I played it aged twelve. :o

To lose a life every time you crash the waveracer thing is just ludicrous! When was the last time you ran out of continues in a modern game and had to start over from scratch?

Best riff ever was "Giana Sisters" on the Amiga. Man, thats awesome.

I got shadow of the beast 2 with the Amiga A500 when we bought it, it was packaged as some kind of "cinema special" (WTF shadow of the beast?) with the awfull nightbreed, days of thunder, and back to the future 2.

I remember SOTB 2 being brain numbingly hard, and i dont think i got off the firs level either.
