Why do people chase 4K gaming?

Ive seen it and played and will always prefer Ultrawide 3440 x 1440p 100hz plus over standard 16:9 4K 60hz

Have you had Ultrawide 2k 100hz and then gone to 4K ?

I’m genuinely interested as my nephew is wanting a new monitor for Christmas and he’s been spellbound by the 4K marketing...when in fact I think he’ll enjoy gaming on Ultrawide more..

He’s seen my setup and played Doom on my X34 but he’s still going on about 4K....

I only wanted 4K/60 because that’s the TV I game on.

Use enough monitors and desks at work, really don’t want to sit at either when I’m relaxing at home.

Not exactly 100Hz on Ultrawide but 75Hz on mine, but I gaming more on my 4K TV than on my monitor at the moment...

...because Monster Hunter World doesn't support ultrawide aspect ratio :D

Hopefully ascending to UltraWide 3440x1440p 144hz soon.

I've seen 4k gaming, not impressed compared to UltraWide.

I'm lucky enough to have ultra wide (X34P) and an LG 4K screen. I've tried both, ultra wide is what I prefer as it feels more immersive. I use the 4K screen for work.

Sticking with ultrawide for home use and gaming, trying to get one at work also as it would be ideal getting a 3440x1440 monitor at work without gsync for the desktop real estate.

You just edit the config file

You just edit the config file

That's a fix for people not getting 2560x1440 option from the game option, not for enabling proper ultrawide aspective ratio.

I can choose 3440x1440 in game, but it still leave two black bars other the two sides. I have seen some people posting about some workarounds via mod, but they just turns out to be 16:9 stretched to 21:9 to fit the fullscreen.

But anyway at the moment the game looks really good on 4K. I am using medium setting at the moment, but it looks really good with HDR enabled- something my monitor can't do.

4K for size, 55''+

Nothing stopping me from using a custom resolution for the ultrawide effect either.

Looking forward to the 8k 75''+ upgrade in a few years.

I don't see the point personally. Does 4K really improve the gaming experience? Personally I could quite happily game at 1080P on a 24". Actually used to have a 1200P, pity don't make them anymore :).
Buying a 4K monitor requires serious hardware still and will do for some time to come. Spending say £1k on the monitor I'd expect to have to pay £2k on GPU(s) to drive it properly (especially 3D shooters) with current tech, IMO, to allow maxing of settings in most games. Gaming at 4K and dropping settings kind of defeats the point to me. And we're paying for all the eye candy to be put in games too :).

I use two monitors so one 27" 1440P g-sync and one 24" flipped vertically is my desk setup - a multi-purpose workstation.

I went from Ultrawide 1440p equivalent to 4k 16:9. I don't regret it, I never really liked ultrawide and I get a lot more out of things being 4k.
It's simply a matter of personal taste and perhaps the kinds of games you play and content you watch.

Some seem to prefer the 16:9 aspect ratio or are put off by the sheer width of the monitor. When looking at buying an ultrawide myself there were a few customer reviews of those who quickly went back to 16:9. Can't say I understand it myself.

The only time I sometimes wish for more vertical space is if I'm looking straight up in a game, in which case the panorama effect of the sky is instead more of an awkward oblong, but I very rarely play anything right now where that's a factor. 3440x1440 is certainly the sweet spot for me.

As for your nephew, he's been brainwashed by glitzy adverts. Like all kids so easily are.

Prefer 4k to ultrawide, i had an asus PG348Q-wtfever for a few days and it was like looking at an envelope with how the monitor is wide but not tall. Had eyefinity for years so ultrawide just looks like a more dinky version of that, old news to me so prefer 16:9.

I've got 3 monitors hooked up to my rig:

2560*1440 144Hz Gsync - I use this for K&M games like BF4, Doom, Wolfenstein, Skyrim etc..

3440*1440 100Hz Gsync - I use this for controller games like Witcher 3, GTA V etc..

3840*2160 60Hz - I use this for watching TV cos it's pish for gaming.

4k is meh, 60Hz is awful.

Everyone is different - personally I don't get on with 4K for a lot of stuff - general desktop, most FPS gaming, etc. I find 2560x1440 perfect. For movie consumption, certain productivity tasks and certain types of games especially if using a controller then 4K is awesome. I like ultra-wide but it couldn't replace 16:9 for me ever - I actually have a 21:9 panel alongside my gaming TN that I use for movies quite a bit but I couldn't swap to that aspect ratio for normal desktop stuff or gaming in general.

Pretty much the same as my setup though the UW doesn't have G-Sync and the 4K display is rarely hooked upto my PC - usually have something else plugged into it for movies/TV, etc.

For me I’d take my 165hz G-sync 1440p monitor, over a 4K 60hz one every single time- the fluidity of the experience is all that matters to me and I’m just not in the slightest bit interested in having my image any sharper.

The only time I can ever see me replacing my monitor now is if it blows up :p

Yea ultrawide is a LOT nicer for gaming on.

Also there are a lot of 4k panels which are just 4k but nothing special, because it's still a big compromise on other things. The image quality and colours aren't great compared to some of the higher end 1440 and 1080 ones.

Need a picture of that setup!
