Why do people have multiple monitors?

What specific tasks do you do that require 2 or 3 monitors?

Do you run a game spread across all?

e.g. setup like this

I think the pics answer the question.

Clearly you can see he has MSN, Windows Explorer, and a web browser open at the same time with no need to even touch the mouse or keyboard they can all be read..

Ok, lazy lol

But is that it?

Would you play a game on all three at once? say CSS or BF2?

Seriously, What else could you do?

Can you play a game on one monitor (css) and surf the web on another, from one pc?

Every single pic i've seen, people have desktop or screen saver, so its a mystery!

i dont run a full time multi monitor setup but do on occasion (crts take up too much desk space)
main reasons multi tasking handy to have the webpage your working on in one and notepad to edit the code on the other.

films, same reason watch on one surf / work on the other

games xfire / msn etc on one game on other hit win key to allow you to move to the one with msn etc

it is very handy but fore the casual surfer / word user overkill

It's very useful if you do any kind of editing work. You can have reference pictures, materials, help files and tutorials on one monitor while working on the other. No need to alt tab constantly. Plus, sometimes alt-tabbing is rubbish and you really want to see both simultaneously.

well, i have dual screen and a laptop.

i can code in one screen, look up information on the other. (i.e. directly compare stuff without having to alt-tab stuff). it's not lazy, it's the same as getting a bigger desk for working on if you have lots of papers? you're essentially doubling the amount of workspace.

i then have msn and email on the laptop, and connect it via synergy, so it acts like part of the same computer.

if it was just a gimmick, then so many people wouldn't be doing it. you can see examples of it in many industries as well. musical producers tend to have dual monitors, and people working in finance have bloomin loads.

large widescreen tft's do appear to be taking the place of multiple monitors, but even then people just keep on getting two of them.

so essentially, it all boils down to the type of person you are (i.e the way you work). most people who try dual monitors would never go back to one, some people don't find them useful at all.

here's my old setup, not really how i normally have it but don't have a current pic. i normall have laptop to the left, then the two monitors at the same height as the laptop screen.

edit: i should also say that most the time if all i'm doing is chatting and surfing, then i'll just be using my laptop on it's own sat on the sofa!

I have a laptop and an external monitor. If I'm web browsing then I can use msn at the same time on the other one. Or I can run a couple of graphics software at once. If I'm gaming then I surf the web on the other monitor while I'm waiting for the game to load.

I use 2 monitors for learning mostly, I have one monitor displaying a book or a training video then I use the other to follow the instructions :)

I'm stuck with 2 for now,

but last night I had remote sessions to two PC's, four telnet sessions, one Oracle app, two FTP clients (+ some web stuff)

So yeh, I could use multiple monitors for sure...! :D

It's a luxury that once you've had it you would never be without multi screens

I am experiencing this at home as I've sold one of my 19" TFTs and the workspace seems so small. Even the 19" itself seems smaller.

Ah well it should get better when my Viewsonic VX2025wm 20" Widescreen arrives and have dual screens again.
