Why do people pointlessly drive slowly?

I mean that on a road with a 50mph limit it will be safe to drive 50mph for 99% of the time when raining or windy, not that it's only safe to drive 50mph on a warm, clear day without wind or rain.

Obviously with snow or frozen road it's different.

I hate people that drive 70mph on the motorway and start tapping their brakes if they drive into a bit of rain.

Ah right. I think I agree.. this is where posting 60mph signs instead of NSL signs would be misleading, as many NSL roads aren't safe to do 60 or even 50 along (country lanes)

French roads have a variable speed limit that depends on weather conditions.

In dry weather rural 2- or 3-lane roads are limited to 90 km/h (56mph), 4-lane expressways (in rural areas) 110 km/h (69mph), and highways (in rural areas) 130 km/h (81mph).

When raining, the limits are lowered to (respectively) 80 (50mph), 100 (62mph), and 110 km/h (69mph).
...
The general speed limit is lowered to 50 km/h on all roads in the fog or other low-visibility conditions if visibility is under 50 meters. (Wikipedia)
I guess that they only rarely have rain and low-visibility conditions in France . . . in fact, probably less than 1% of the time

JUst because a speed limit is say 60mph you do not have to do 60mph...is not the law.

If you not happy with the speed someone does overtake when safe to do so.

Should we start another thread about why poeple pointlessly drive fast ???

Guess again. Worst rain I have ever driven through was in France. They get quite amazing weather, which is precisely why they have those rules in place.

50mph isn't a problem but 40mph is bad driving.

Would be nice if these idiots look in their mirrors and realise the long queue is caused by them and nobody else, they should pull over and let people pass. Overtaking seems taboo nowadays to most as they do not know how to so the queue builds up quick.

I was in court years ago and someone was fined for impeding the flow of traffic. They should prosecute more often as it causes more near misses when there are people trying to overtake when it is not safe to do so.
