Why do people queue in one lane?

The British gentleman in me does feel incredibly guilty when I skip a long queue by using the empty lane....but it passes when I realise I've done it right and saved 10 mins on my journey.
 
because people are ****** idiots and don't understand the issues they are causing by queuing in one lane and blocking roundabouts and other junctions.
the lack of awareness of whats going on aroun you and behind you, for most drivers is shocking.
you tell them they are blocking junctions and they don't have a clue what you're talking about.

The best way to merge is not to indicate, not to politely look at the driver in the hope he'll let you in, just find a gap and go for it. I used to do it politely but at least half the time the morons accelerate into the gap and block you, this way you're in their lane before their tiny minds have even comprehended what's happened. You also have the added bonus of watching the rage unfold in your rear view mirror.
 
some people enjoy queuing, because they can moan about how bad the traffic is and how in the good old days the roads were clear.
 
Has anyone else noticed lorry drivers doing the whole 'lane policeman' thing?

Pretty dangerous if you ask me. Also agreeing with everyone else in this thread, people should really learn to merge.

You see this on motorways a lot in the night :(
 
What annoys me is when traffic builds up in the filter lane and then what happens when an emergency vehicle comes along? Banish filter lanes and keep one lane clear. 50/50 on them. If I want to go somewhere I leave earlier.....

I don't do it but I understand the 'lane policeman' thing because if I'm queuing normally then another lane of cars comes it's going to take me twice as long to get back. I can understand that with lorry drivers because they have set limits and if they are stuck in a motorway queue they could have their licence taken off them. 4.5hrs, if they are on 4 hrs but then stuck in traffic for 30 minutes that 60s to park up becomes crucial.

This as well. Driving standards of car drivers is appalling nowadays.
 
If it is 900 yards people might not be completely aware of what is there at the end.

Worst thing would be to go down the lane and it being a left only lane or something.

In fact it is one of my annoyances where I'm the person that wants to turn left for example and all the people turning right have blocked up the junction (or the other way around). I always plan ahead to avoid traffic but you can't really avoid people unnecessarily blocking your lane.

I do however love people being afraid to use bus lanes.

Get a bike, you can filter past all you like and people dont seem to mind bikes "pushing in" I've found.
 
They should do a public awareness announcement on TV to highlight this issue as it's a real problem across the country and morons cause collisions.

I lost the head the other night coming down a lane that was ultimately closed off due to roadworks. It was in the city so no advance warning and there was a couple of cars infront. It took me flipping out in a threatening manner at every car that passed before forcing my way in eventually.

If the lane is closed off and it isn't a clear merging of two lanes, they don't have to let you in. You are just changing lanes and those rules apply. If the other lane is freely moving, not many people will let you in.
 
It wasnt moving freely and the same rules should apply. Traffic moves efficiently when people allow proper merging. The lane was indicated to merge but only at the actual roadworks, no advanced warning.
 
People are worried that others will say they are "pushing in", like when they were in primary school and people were waiting in the lunch queue.

Unfortunately, they don't really think anything more of the roundabout and traffic lights, 300metres back which are completely chocked up with traffic, because they haven't used the second lane to ease the congestion.

I always use the second lane if it's clear, but in fairness, I have noticed people are generally a lot more willing to merge with you if you hang back slightly and go in very defensively. If you go steaming up right to where everyone merges, this gets peoples backs up and they end up trying to block you out.

This. I can't be arsed with the hassle and aggravation of trying to merge when everyone is thinking "look at that ***** who thinks he can dive to the front and squeeze in" so they sit bumper to bumper with blinkers on. So I just sit in the queue and make the problem worse
