why do people spend 100s modding crap cars?

im forever seeing 1 litre fiestas, coras with body kits, fancy head lights alloys it just looks cheap and crap... do people have no taste these days?

I know, they should get a life, get a decent job, get a very nice car, and not do it up, just mod certain parts that are already on it and make it look flash, not make it look s amess...

Because they can and want to, why do people buy the clothes they do, or listen to the music they, its all down to personal preference.

The may spend thousands, but modding means you buy a cheap shed and gradually mod as and when you have the money.

Buying a decent car in the first place means spending 12k in one lump sum.

Because they buy a crap car and instead of saving money on upgrading their shed they'd rather spend the money they could have saved on making their car look better *.

Remember, everyone is different, if they want to stick tat on their cars then that's no problem to me, as long as it's all legal. What does annoy me is people driving like idiots.

About 30 mins ago, I was sitting in the drive through in McDonalds, waiting for my Burger, chips and tasty beverage... when some barry boy in a **** box comes *flying* into McDonalds and uses the drive through as a rally course. Can't believe he didn't clip something.

It's times like that I wish I was a coppa.

I can see why. They could only afford to buy and run something that isn't exactly going to set the world on fire. At the end of each month they only have £50>100 max left over, so a better car is a LONG way off so they spend £30 to £100 on something to try and improve what they've got. Maybe save up a 2,3,4 months to get a bigger upgrade like a set of cheap alloys, get the car lowered, new exhaust etc.

Unfortunately the results aren't always the best but IMO there are a lot of well modded cars out there, whether they have a 1.1 lump in their Saxo is neither here nor there if they are just trying to make the best of what they have.

I've got a totally stock 1.4l fiesta but I've bought a lear gaiter for the gearbox to replace the nasty plastic one, I'm getting a smooth rear wiper and might be colour coding the side strips soon, it's pointless in the long run but I just like it. Some people just turn it into an obsession.

Thats fine, its the viper stripes on mondeos etc that confuse me, why would that look good?

People have taste, its just different to yours

They do it because they can, and like the individuality that modding their own car brings. It's just a phase that most people grow out of. About 6 years ago I had a Corsa sri and spent a couple of grand on that (about the same as it was worth) and loved it. No-one else had exactly the same car as me. The odd £50 here, £100 there, soon add up and before you know it you've spent a huge amount. Nowadays I look back at the pics of it and think WTF was I thinking!!! But at the time its all good, and if you enjoy something then who cares what other people think of it.

ok, but this argument falls down when you consider the huge hike in insurance premium when an 18/19 year old mods their car. If they can afford to pay 2000 quid a year to insure their modded up 1.1, then why not just buy a better car?

Assuming that they do actually have insurance of course...

Why mod at all? Is it merely a question of money?

Would it be okay to mod a cheap car if for some reason the parts were free?
