Why do people spit ?

Im in my 30's and sometimes feel a bit old around some of the youngsters at work, especially when you have a colleague natter about classic movies (today) and mention films like The Goonies, Starship Troopers, The Rock...the list goes on (for my generation). They look at you blank like youve just spoken a foreign language, damn it makes you feel old.

Anyway, started off topic there.

Spitting. Why do people do it?

I dont get it, if you're playing a physical sport okay fine but in public, really?!? I must have missed this step when growing up as Ive never really "understood" it. What does it mean? Is it a territorial thing? The funny thing is, its not always youngsters (just remembered why I started the thread with a story), its some older people too but the youngsters do it at work, dirty oiks.

Im sure others notice it as well, a person walking down the street - normally male - just spits on the floor for no reason. Sometimes not far from where you're walking, thats why I thought it was territorial or a macho thing. Im sure I have walked down a street before but the person coming the other way waits for when they are near you and then spits, not at you but on the floor. Its not like they have a chest infection or 'hocking up a loogie' (as the yanks put it I think), its just a bit of saliva, you know?

I dont get it, discuss?
 
I personally get a lot of saliva build up in my mouth so I swallow a lot which probably makes it look like I'm nervous.
 
Used to know a Punk who we called Spit because he used to spit all the time. He stopped after some epic taunting so we called him Spat instead. :p

If I spit it's because I have a load of crap in my mouth I don't want to swallow, Bit like some women I s'pose.
 
To get rid of flies, greenies and blood.

But i know what you mean, I used to spit all the time (when about 13) I think at first it was because all my friends were, then it was just habit.
 
All I can say is: never go to China. They're constantly at it. I spent 25 hours on a train from Guangzhou to Kunming and the whole time people were spitting into plastic bags. Most unpleasant.
 
Never understood why people feel the need to spit in public.

Far enough if your ill but if you are surely you'd have some tissues with you.

I guess I sometimes do when having a fag, but try to avoid being seen and make sure it's out of the way. Grimey, I know.
 
Because they are disgusting, have no manners and it's become an unconcious habit, and within their peer group it is socially acceptable.
 
Its normal for "them" I like how they just open up a packet of fags or a cheeseburger from mcdonalds and just nonchalantly throw the wrapper on the floor, they don't even give it a second thought, utter cretins that should be banned from breeding.
 
It's disgusting, even when doing physical activity I don't feel the need to spit every where. You see footballers doing it all the time, I always thought kids copied them and it then became a habit. Why footballers want to roll around in spit I'll never know.
