Why do photo colors look different in Photoshop...

...than compared to when they're viewed in a web browser i.e. after you've uploaded them to a web site? For example, I've just edited a photo of my cat and it looks great in Photoshop but way over contrasted in a browser.

In Photoshop you can see much more detail in his left eye, but it's almost completely black in my browser and makes it look crappy
 
First make sure your in SRBG colour space.
Go to - view - proof setup - select monitor RGB. Images should look the same in photoshop as they do in you browser.
 
I think it's RGB 8 bit. Yes it does make a small'ish difference depending on your point of view.
16 bit holds more information within the image, but it is much more demanding on your PC, for example, save an image in 8 bit, then do the same in 16 bit and see how much longer it takes.
