Why do playstations sometimes refuse to connect?

This is some intermittent annoyance. Sometimes, I turn on my PS3 or PS4, and it just refuses to connect to the Internet. No matter what I do, it won't connect. Turning it off and on again doesn't work. Restarting the router doesn't work. The only thing that ever works is switching it off, going away for half an hour, and coming back. It's usually okay then. All my other devices have no problem connecting during this period.

This problem is on a wired connection. When it happens, I can switch it to WiFi and it usually works, albeit with horrific ping, so I don't like to use it.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is it a problem with the consoles, my router, my ISP? Would love to find a way to eliminate this problem entirely.

Any chance of using it on another network?

Could be hard to pin down otherwise.

I don't think it's a PS issue, couple of things come to mind

1) there someone else using all of the bandwidth in the background
2) a DNS issue

What ISP are you using and what router?

Its not a known problem, you could have a faulty console maybe, what router do you have?

have you tried resetting the router (bit of a hassle though) or upgrading your routers firmware if possible?

I live alone; nobody else is using my bandwidth. ISP is Virgin Media.

If the console is faulty, then I have two consoles with the exact same fault.

OK you live alone, but is your wireless properly passworded etc?

What NAT type are you seeing when you are connected to the internet on the PS3 or PS4?

What router is it? is both the PS3 and PS4 connected wired and using a different cable?
