Why do they do it to me?

Windows 2012 Essentials seemed like a good opportunity to replace my WHS v1 machine. I even bought a HP Microserver to host it on and as an MSDN subscriber there is no license cost for the OS.

First issue: I moved one of my 2 x 1tb drives to the new server, created a storage pool (non resilient as I had only the one drive) and copied everything across. Then added the second disk. To my surprise/horror I found that it isn't possible to change the resilience type on an existing pool to the 2 way mirror.

Second issue: As I was getting a bit low on space anyway I thought I would buy a 3tb WD Red. That would allow me to create a 2 way mirrored pool over the second 1tb and new 3tb drive. That was fine and then I read that storage space does not do any balancing across the pools. So adding the first 1tb drive to that pool will not increase the available space in that pool.

Not sure what to do now, I am considering going back to WHS v1. The other option is to use third party drive pooling but I am not sure if any of them support Windows Server 2012.

Thanks MS you really dropped the ball on this one....again

I have been playing with Storage Spaces in the past week, and am so disappointed. Basically I discovered the same things you did. I was completely blown away at how incomplete this technology is. What a huge disappointment.

download unraid (google it) you can mix and match disks. expand on the fly, present itself to windows as one partition. when disks are not in use they go to sleep.

If a disk fails, replace it and it builds itself up from parity.

Unraid is free for 3 disks

I have had a look at unRaid but looks like a replacement OS. I was hoping to gain other benefits to running Server 2012 Essentials, client backups etc.

I think I will give it a little while and see if DrivePool gets support for Windows 2012 before deciding what to do.

I probably should have seen it coming. I had been reading all the marketing about Storage Space and naively assumed it would work like DriveExtender.

After a couple of weeks of consideration I think I am going to revert back to WHS 2011 with DrivePool. At the moment the flexibility of the storage balancing outweighs any of the other benefits of Essentials 2012.
