why do they stick dvds in with blu rays

Last Christmas, when I worked in HMV, Disney marketed this "Triple Play" idea as allowing "you to watch the blu-ray on your blu-ray player, while the kids can watch it in their room on their DVD player".

Kind of makes sense, I guess.

I never quite understood these triple play discs.

My first one was Star Trek about a month ago, never looked back since. Will be getting 2 Blu Rays for Christmas and have insisted on the Triple Play ones. (The A Team and Inception both £15 each! Bargain!)

The digital copy is nice to have on my iPhone and the dvd comes in handy if I want to lend it out to someone or go over and see the missus. For £15 I think they are a steal*.

* I admit not all Triple Plays are that cheap. I think if there was over a £5 difference between the Blu Ray only and a Triple Play box I'd get the Blu Ray only, under a fiver tho and i'd be Triple Play all the way (:p)

For once I think the industry has it right. They're both discs, so why not save on the extra marketing, packaging and transport. Not to mention also shops that can save space that could now be potentially used for more Blu-Rays.

The digital copy is handy. It's nice owning a hard copy of a movie, but having something on your computer which you can just click and play makes it easier.

I wonder if they'll ever be able to get them onto one disc, so a DVD player will play the film, then a bluray player will play the high definition one, possible? Or does the structure of the bluray prevent this?

I think you've answered your own question - I can't see a DVD being able to read from something which is effectively a BR with an extra bit tacked on.
