Why do you get "cramp"?

I used to get this quite often in my right leg during the night, but not had it since around abouts july 05.

Last time was when i was asleep on someones living room floor after i had been at their house drinking, i woke everyone else in the room up rolling around on the floor in pain :(

I find that they hurt a hell of a lot more than fractures & dislocations & used to leave me walking with a bit of a limp for upto about 12 hours after.

I ocasionally get it slightly in my foot when driving, but its more uncomfortable than painful.

Just a thought, imagine getting one whilst recovering from a breakeage in the same part of the body, nasty

Lactic acid is made when we anaerobically respire- in simpler terms, we anaerobicaly respire when there is not enough oxygen present for aerobic respiration to occur. A common example of this is when we are running and our bodies cannot take in enough oxygen to respire aerobically, so we use just glucose which produces mostly lactic acid and some energy. It is this build up of lactic acid which causes cramps and more often than not, oxygen debt. Lactic acid does contain some energy but it is not usable by the body.

The cause was probably you not getting enough oxygen so your cells started to respire anaerobically to produce energy but also created a store of lactic acid. This lactic acid would not be removed until the cells began to respire aerobically again. Just had a test on this in Biology :o

and thats why you breath harder after you run for a while, because your getting rid of the lactic acid with oxygen and it gets turned into water :D I think....long time since i did biology.

i sometimes get really bad cramp if i dont stretch down properly after basketball. Got it in my thigh once when stretch over to get something, and it literally crippled me. I fell flat on my face and was screaming in pain for about 15 minute, my parents thought i'd electrocuted myself. That 15 minutes was with someone rubbing the "knot" out of my muscle too :(

I get abd cramps when on a massive bike ride. It happens in the front muscles and backs of leg.

I can't straighten it to get rid of one or stretch back to get rid of the other. It's horrible. I look a right plonker trying to get off the bike and sort myself out.

A friend of mine is into bodybuilding on an Arnie scale, and he would wake up in the middle of the night with his fingers and wrists contorted to the point of him screaming in pain.

I get cramp quite often - the worst ones are in my shoulders/neck and my throat :s

I had thought it was a lack of salt as one of the causes as well

My wife has a habit of getting cramp while... uh... well, let's just say it's not very convenient.
Surely it'd be pretty good for you? Just hold on tight...
