Oh Canada!
Asked schiit, they can't help, so I've come to you guys. My modi won't let me adjust the system volume on my mac. I get line level out. That's it. Gotta adjust the volume in apps. When I try to adjust volume I get the "no smoking slash" and the volume control in the audio section of settings in osx is greyed out.

Thoughts?

I have tried disabling app nap as per Schiit's instructions. Did nothing.

Im not a fan of apple either, But when it comes to Audio the Mac is proberly the best on the market for a laptop so i would have thought they wouldn't be a problem with the Schiit but saying that Apple is very fussy with what you can have on there devices

Not got that problem on Windows and I've used my Schiit stack on different versions of Windows and several PC's.

The other question is, why would you want to adjust the system volume, when line out is what you need? Any volume adjustments should be done in the analogue domain (after the DAC), otherwise you can be looking at loss of information, which means sound degradation.

^ This is why the mac doesn't let you do it... Tho Windows is the more sensible one as it'll let you if you want which doesn't stop you doing it properly either. Which is nice when you want to plug your (ampless) headphones into your monitors and just dock your mac with usb & displayport... Works fine with windows running via bootcamp but osx makes it a pain as you don't have a downstream amp and need to alter the os itself which gets messy. Combine that with only partial multi-stream support (no daisy chain via dp 1.2 even tho hardware can do it) and you've got the main reasons i find osx annoying on a casual usability basis for a work machine.

^ this. The Mac recognises the Modi should be a line out and so the volume can’t change. That’s the whole reason the Magni has an analogue volume pot.
