I think it's quite an interesting question. My job is online, so I take a quick break on online forums, and I guess I do find it relaxing reading about other people's issues. It's relaxing because it's interesting, and they're not actual problems that you have, and you don't actually have to do anything about them, but you can try and help if possible.

I hardly ever read the hardware problem threads here ... I couldn't help and it's far too difficult anyway.

"It is fashionable to suggest that cyberspace is some island of the blessed where people are free to indulge and express their individuality. This is not right. I have seen many people spill out their emotions – their guts – online and I did so myself until I started to see that I had commodified myself.

Commodification means that you turn something into a product which has a money value. In the 19th century, commodities were made in factories by workers who were mostly exploited. But I created my interior thoughts as commodities for the corporations that owned the board I was posting to, like CompuServe or AOL. And that commodity was then sold on to other consumer entities as entertainment.

Cyberspace is a black hole, it absorbs energy and personality and then re-presents it as an emotional spectacle. It is done by businesses that commodify human interaction and emotion. And we are getting lost in the spectacle."

I read a good book when I want to relax, the Internet is far too fast-paced and frenetic and ten-tabs-open-and-two-youtube-videos and whatnot :p

I'd say the behaviour response/need that makes me come to Internet forums is procrastination, not relaxation.

That's a nice quote - where is it from? Sounds like a Paul Virilio or something.

e: Oh, Adam Curtis? A lot less academic but a lot more interesting :p

i find the internet becomes so much more interesting if i have something else i should be doing.. like if i need to go to bed early, or hoover etc, always seem to find so many interesting things at those exact moments

Not Adam Curtis himself, but he had it in one of his films. Originally it was something posted on usenet back in the day.

Have seen all of his stuff, he's really good at recycling the complex thought of people like the Frankfurt School and making it far more compelling and a lot less elitist. Always give his docus a rewatch every few years.
