Why does bittorrent make everything so slow?

When I have a bittorrent download (using BitComet) going it makes everything else go very slowly. It's especially noticeable if I try to use the web at the same time. Ok so this is to be expected really but I want to know specifically what causes it. It sometimes happens when a download is going at 30k (I have a 4Mbps connection) but sometimes it doesn't happen even if it's going 200k. I suspect it's to do with the amount of TCP connections it uses. Anyone able to shed some light on this? I want to find out how I can limit my bt usage so web still works without too many problems. I realise it will affect my download speed though. I'm not expecting miracles.

Ah thanks. Does utorrent support all the same features as bitcomet? Multi tracker among other things, seems some well known bt clients don't support this.

not sure what its features list is, All I know is I can download faster in utorrent than others (did use bitcomet for a few years). And it has less impact on your system.

Just checked the faq:
Does µTorrent support multi-tracker torrents?
Yes. µTorrent currently announces to all tracker groups at the same time, but only one tracker per torrent group. To see the trackers in the torrent, simply double click on it, or right click and select Properties. Trackers separated by an empty line indicate they are in separate tracker groups

Think I may have found the problem. Turns out my router (Linksys WRT54GS) has pretty bad problems with bittorrent. There is an unofficial fix so I might give that a go (I'm just worried I'll destroy my router).

Drop your upload rate. :)

Only on 2mb here, but i set my upload to 20k, and i can download at about 230k+, and my internet still runs fine, its all in the upload rate.

Already set max global upload speed to 20k. Still have problems sometimes.

Everything seems to be going a bit smoother now. Upgraded the firmware on the router and applied that patch to windows. Might make the switch to utorrent when my current downloads are done. Thanks for the help everyone.

just use utorrent, its SOO much better than any other torrent client

i have utorrent running on this pc and another remote one, and can still use remote desktop between them with no problems

try downing your upload to about 10 to see if that solves your problems?

the usage of utorrent is very low too, can play games no problem with very little (not noticable) fps loss

Is there any way to transfer my partially downloaded files to utorrent from bitcomet?

just uninstall bitcomet, install utorrent, open the torrent files in utorrent, and point it to save the files in the same directory as they were in bitcomet

it should check how much is downlodaed and resume from the same point :)

Got a link to this fix?

Right here

It involves upgrading the firmware to an unofficial version. It's still based on the original so most things are the same, it just adds loads more options.

Would I get those options with the DD-WRT firmware?

I'm liking the look of Thibor's HyperWRT, but I'm weary about editting the startup script. :o

Yes, though you need to run the script whatever firmware you run.
You seem to know a lot about this sort of thing, so I hope you don't mind me asking this.

I read somewhere (when using DD-WRT) about whenever you setup port-forwarding in the router, and it has the firewall turned on, you had to edit a NAT table or something.
