Why does Dolby Headphone sound like it's underwater?

So i recently picked up a Xonar D2, which i'll mostly be using with headphones although i also have an Aego 2.1 setup. I'm on Windows 7. I run a good mix of music games and video, and i'm interested in clear positioning for gaming through headphones, so i assumed Dolby headphone would be a good choice. (I'm not necessarily playing EAX games)

Now i am waiting on some goldrings to come through, but currently i'm on my old Sennheiser HD485's. After installing everything i'm finding that the default sound from the Xonar in games is sharp, clear but nothing mind blowing. While the DSP modes, which turn on Dolby Headphones suddenly make the sound very bassy and muffled - i assume there's an echo effect introduced in there but ultimately it sounds to my ears as if i'm suddenly playing underwater when coming from the untouched output.

I've tried fiddling 'room' options and messing with the EQ and Effects tab, but nothing i can do makes this sound pleasing to my ears. Even for music i feel as though no DSP modes with just a EQ tweak like s-rock produces nicer sound.

Am i doing something wrong?

Have you used all 3 types of Dolby Headphone - DH1, DH2 and DH3? The latter two have fairly strong reverb effects that aren't to everyones taste.

Also, Dolby Headphone is very headphone dependent. It's been pretty good on all the Goldrings I've tried though so you may be pleasantly surprised when you try them.

Make sure all other DSPs are off when using Dolby Headphone. You definitely don't want additional room effects.
