Why does DU Meter show constant dl and uploading?

Pull the phoneline out and see if you still get traffic, if you do it's internal lan traffic and you need not worry about it.

Ok I have just pulled the phone line on the router and DU meter still shows its downloading and uploading. So it seems it must be the network traffic and not the internet? DU meter though cant seem to split the two? Next Im gonna install BW meter which can.

Well check this out...

duetc.jpg

The top 2 are BW meter and the bottom id DU meter (both show when I wasnt doing anything with the web). I think that proves that its not my internet connection downloading and uploading but its my lan. Seems DU cant differ between the two, so tells me its all activity. Am I correct here? Really really thanks to all for the help. I was very worried cos Nildram have a peak time when you can download and an off peak usage, I didnt know what the hell was going on, and was confused by the traffic. I feel waaay better now though. :)

would still be nice to see whats going on on the lan though...

if your pc is sitting idle, and its the only host attached to the lan then other than the odd broadcast etc there shouldnt be any traffic...

you said you had installed ethereal... its quite simple to use (obviously the difficult bit is decoding what it shows you!) you can just choose capture, then the interface, configure some basic parameters and it will show you whats going on...

would be interested to see a screenshot of that...

Sure I'll post a screenshot of ethreal mate. Not sure at all why the Lan is downloading and uploading constantly though at all.

the likelihood is that it is just the way the application is interfacing with the hardware... but ethereal shows exactly what is going on... so we'll soon find out!

Im not sure what to post from ethreal though. I ran it and clicked capture / interface / clicked capture on my lan and it gave me another screen, it was doing something I clicked stop and it displayed loads of details about my router and lan.. is this waht you would like to see?

Obviously I dont want to show my computers IP address, I dont want to invite trouble lol. ;)

if the capture only shows lan addresses then there isnt really anything to hide, given that your lan consists of, at most, two hosts - and your using the default settings on your router so it doesnt take a rocket scientist to work out what your lan addresses are anyway!

if it shows your real wan address then you might want to smudge that out...

other wan addresses though would be of use to determine whats going on!

i reckon it's redundant broadcast traffic from the wireless AP in your router...

try disabling the wireless part of the router and see what happens then...

It may just be a point of reducing the poll / refresh time in ms of the wireless signal (forgotten the technical name of it)...

Alex

edit: before disabling - does having your wireless laptop on and connected differ from having it actually turned off (rather than just disconnected)????

Hello mate no it makes no difference if the laptop is on or off/disconnected etc.

I will post some screenys soon btw. :)

i think he means the wireless access point on the router...

wireless beacon messages (i think) are broadcast messages... which means they probably propagate onto the wired switch too... though if you have ssid broadcast disabled i think that disables beacon messages...

its a valid point though...!

I really dont know if this is what you want to see? theres tons and tons of it, I just highlighted a bit that may make sense to some one? Sorry for the size of pic btw.

If you need to see something else give me a shout.

edit:

Damn cant seem to make the pic bigger lol.

can u export it to a log? and upload that??

And have you tried disabling the wireless part of your router yet to see if that makes any difference?

Alex

I cant find an option inside the routers config to disable it. Any ideas?

Not sure if I can get a log but I'll try to.

Edit:

theres an option for Enable Wireless access point? I can untick that, is this it?

Not read the whole thread properly, but I knew what was happening from the first post.

4tw tbh!

But as previously said, find out what is running on your LAN connection, shouldn't be acting like that. Do you have a second machine?

Excellent cheers Manlove, I can use DU meter again lol. :D

I unticked

Enable Wireless Access Point
Allow Broadcast of Name (SSID)

and ticked

Wireless Isolation

Still though the lan shows down and upping.

I don't know my wireless networks, but setup MAC filtering.
