The Wii isnt for gamers, or its for 'wannabe gamers'. I'm not saying its a fad or anything, but nintendo seem to be losing touch with their hardcore fanbase, they are milking mario and introducing nonsense like the wii fit.

Fair enough if it gets them sales, they are a business at the end of the day, but as a gamer I am starting to distance myself from nintendo.

You have spewed this rubbish on another thread. You just don't get it, Nintendo has actually appealed to their hardcore fan base, as well as capturing audiences that Microsoft and Sony could not. It's worth remembering that far less people owned Gamecubes than Wiis, yet you seem adamant that it's just not a gaming machine for even the hardcore Nintendo fans. Games like Mario Galaxy and Metroid Prime 3 are on the horizon but that does not stop you from claiming Nintendo is losing touch despite the fact that their DS and Wiis have sold far, far more than the other two consoles combined.

I'm going to ask you a question: define gaming. You obviously seem to think it's lacking something that makes it a gaming machine, something the other two consoles have that the Wii doesn't, even though it's the biggest sellout in console history.

Yeah great stuff.

Less cutting edge trying to sell you a gamecube for £250. Yeh way to go nintendo. More of it please.

Another person who completely misses the point. Well done on judging a console and its purpose by hardware alone. I suppose by your same vein I can say the PS3 and the X360 are the one and same thing - their hardware is more similair to each other than the Wii and Gamecube's architectures. Did you not notice the motion controllers the Wii uses, as well as the utilization of it in the games? I don't think you have, otherwise you wouldn't have said such a stupid, ignorant comment. It's not even £200 either.

I don't get why people think it is somehow a good thing for MS and Sony to be losing money hand over fist on their consoles.

I agree but even Miyamoto has said he wanted the Wii to be much cheaper. Just imagine how many Wii consoles would have sold if it were £129.99 (the same as the Cube launch price). As Phemo says it needs more quality games and for them to arrive on a more regular basis. That was my only complaint with the N64 and the Cube too. It's nuts really because I always have a list of four of five DS games I want but with the Wii it's seems like we have a good game every couple of months or so and it's not enough.

Well it's a good thing for the consumer isn't it... or would you rather pay £600 + for a PS3 so that they can make a little profit on each one?

Yeah, much more sensible to make massive losses...

You've very nicely cut short the quote there to justify the comment.

In the short term maybe but long term consumer could lose out. All the money being lost on the PS3 is money that could be spend on developing games or on developing PS4.

Where as Nintendo are in a very healthy position for pushing the envelope development wise. The PS3 will have to play it safe as they can't afford to take any risks now. Sony needs a big user base to get the money back on games license but thats just not happening. The accountants will be having sleepless nights!

Sony may have very deep pockets and still likely to recover on the PS3 in the years ahead (lots of people happy with their PS2 till the PS3 has a major drop in price) but they still have to budget.

My Wii looks rife on my 32 inch HDTV via component. Still, it's good fun to play so while I'm actually playing the games I don't notice.

My only complaint with the Wii is the lack of games. It's been out 8 months now and we only have a handful of decent titles. It's just not good enough.
Indeed, Mario strikers, RE4 and Zelda look spamtastic on my 37" HDTV. I think people are just being tools for the sake of fanboyism. The Wii graphics are nothing special, but they are fine.

Really where are people getting the idea it's as powerful as two gamecubes?? Its more like a gamecube 1.1

Incorrect.

Firstly, there is no official announcements by Nintendo on the exact hardware so any comparison is pointless.

Secondly all rumors form developers point towards 2x the power and memory.

Thirdly. The wii runs in non HD resolution, so relative to the other consoles it gets a 3-4x boost merely by not having to output so many pixels.

Fourthly. The power of the console has nothing to do with sales figures, profits, the available games, the fun factor. The PS2 sold millions and it was by far the most underpowered console of the the 3 last gen.

Fifthly: the Wii has far more powerful control interfaces than any other console.

The wii is a great console, great for kids, the whole family. WII+M8S+BEER = is a very enjoyable night. Also I own a care home and we have had Wii partys for the residents and the grandkids. I laughed my nipples off when I see 90+ year old great grannies playing wii boxing:)

I thought they publicly stated (very conservatively as usual) that it was around 1.5 times the power of the cube?

GameCube 1.1? I hope you're not one of these poor people who base the consoles power on the average game released for it (with very short and rushed development for most of them, and GameCube ports for the others) as that would make you look like a fool.

I used the wii on a 42" plasma, tbh the games were that much fun with me, the missus and our 3 kids that you dont even notice the graphics

I have a 360 and they have their own pc's but the wii is the only console where we can spend an evening as a family and all get on and have fun!!!!

worth every penny just for the pleasure it gave over christmas and when friends come round... few beers and wii boxing or bowling = a great laff for all

thats what its about for me, pc for fps/rts, 360 for a bit of pro evo etc and the wii for playing with friends and family

They mentioned in parsing that the main processor was around 1.5times as powerful, being Nintendo this will be a conservative figure.
But somethings are suspected of being more like twice the power, such as the amount of memory, which allows bigger worlds, higher res textures, more details, less loading times, etc. The game disc has a bigger capacity allow more content and higher res movies for cut scenes and better online media streaming. The graphics processor is rumored around 1.5-2.0 faster clock speed, but with internal improvements and optimizations, better memory controller etc. And there is better drivers and firmware.

Plus being non-HD means an 1.5x is actually 1.5 times. The jump to HD resolutions requires 4 times the memory just for the frame buffer etc. and requires 4x the memory bandwidth to shift the data.

So the wii should provide nicer graphics than the GC, we just haven't seen this yet. games like MP3 and Mario Galaxy should show what it is capable of.

This post sums it up... the games on my Wii are so immersive that I really don't notice that the graphics aren't HD when I'm playing. I guess I notice it more when I'm spectating, but when you're swinging your arms Tim Henman-style in Wii Sports, or acting like a bafoon in Rayman, or cueing a shot like you're Jimmy White in Wii Play, you become so engrossed that you simply don't care.

On the other hand, when playing 360 games (my sister's not mine, as I don't own one) I find myself spending time commenting on how the graphics look nice as I'm losing at Gears of War, or how the reflection on the cars in PGR3 is impressive. The games may look more realistic, but I don't necessarily find them as immersive as a result.

HD graphics would be a nice addition, and I hope that we'll get them in a future console, but importantly I don't want to lose the feeling I get when I'm playing certain Wii games that other consoles don't seem to be able to offer me.

I know 4 people with a wii, no one with a PS3 or Xbox, and I know 7-9 people who want to buy a wii. None of these people have owned a console previously or played many PC games.

My mum played her first ever console game the other week, as did one of my flatmates.

That is the power of the wii right there. That makes the wii infinitely more powerful than most prior consoles.

I see your points and I suppose to a degree I can agree with them GarethDW, however, I find the opposite. Bar Zelda and Resident Evil 4 there are no immersive games on the Nintendo Wii for me, where as I have been engrossed by many Xbox360 titles.
