Why does imovie not accept avi?

This is infuriating. I have fraps my gaming awesomeness and now Imovie will not accept it when importing.

How can i get imovie to accept avi? I think I encoded the avi with h.264 codec in windows to compress it from 100GB to 3.5GB.

how can I convert X to MOV without touching the resolution or quality of the source?

I vasically dont want to create a 3.5GB > 100GB MOV file.

Having an H.264 video stream inside an AVI container is very unheard of.

If it is able to be re-muxed to an MP4 (or even a MOV ideally) then it would be possible, but alas my Google Fu for muxing between these 2 formats has failed.

Thats the guide I follow to compress the raw fraps avi files which are massive!

Maybe I need to find a native way of converting these avi files into MOV?

What tools do you guys use?
