Why does it take so long for Bluray releases?

It baffles me. Surely it can only be down to money. Make as much money off people buying the SD DVD's then "re-release" films in bluray with plenty of marketing focussed on each one.

Take for example The Soprano's. Series 1 and 6 are available in bluray but not seasons 2-5! That is just crazy.

Star Wars is being released towards the latter end of this year. I mean, come on, what on earth is holding up the release?? Is it really that hard to bluray-ify a film/tv series?!?!?! What is the big hold up that means the bluray market is still relatively small.

The Lord of the Rings theatrical release in bluray was a complete and utter joke aswell.

I've been meaning to get the West Wing Series 1-6 but I feel I am going to be hanging on forever until they release it in HD.

Answers on a postcard.

It's not just a case of getting things released asap unfortunately, in the end, it is a business and a fair amount of strategy and planning goes into this.

For instance, the Star Wars Blu Ray is out september 30th, which puts it out on shelves just in time for xmas. They're just trying to maximise their sales/profit.

You'll find the same thing happens across other entertainment formats, whether it's music, games or films. They're scheduled to avoid the competition and to reap the most reward when they are released.

The DVD/Blu Ray market as a whole has taken a slump in recent years, the potential for profit just isn't there for certain films or series, so why should the studio release them.

At the end of the day, it's all about money, and not catering for the fans of a select title or franchise.
