Why does mirror's edge get so much flak?

I've been playing mirror's edge, and I've been finding it really fun. Indeed, it's the most fun I've had in a while. The free running is well implemented, the visuals look really nice, and the way the game is portrayed really draws me in. My question is, why has it been getting so much indifference/hatred from critics?

i like this game, very fun.
but then there is the onnoying trial/error apect of it, and the fighting is very hard

but the good still outways the bad :) im playing it again in 'hard' now (no real difference really)

I think its a bit one dimensional and very short with no replay value. Apart from that it looks very nice :)

this game kind of reminds me of the matrix, and bashing through those red doors is always fun :D, but i don't understand that 1 door that says 'out of order' so you can't kick through it wtf :p

I want to like it more than the game actually lets me. I love the entire running/jumping/climbing mechanic - it works really well, but at the same time, I feel like I'm playing half a game. I feel as if I've been given the ability to move around in style (and I do like the look they've gone with), but that's it.

I guess if you're into the entire free-running "thing", then this is probably a must have game, but for me it feels like a starter course, and my main meal has gone missing.

I like it. The lack of different routes is annoying but when in the open it's great. It would be nice if it was in a different setting though with more variety other than rooftops and inside buildings.

Hopefully the next ME (obviously going to be one) will have a few more different landscapes.

Yes there is, the chases are getting on peoples nerves probabaly, no time to look out where to go or the chopper mows you down, the toughness to kill swat teams, and some general bits that are just too much trial and error, you need to die like 6 times before succeeding and that's just working on my nerves. Fair enough though that was on normal difficulty and as an adventure noob I should have played on easy, but still, it's too much trial and error at some bits like where lots of swat guys come out of doors in front of you and you have to sprint somehow past them... Finally there's the issue of the black bars on anything else than 16:9, on 16:10 it's not really that annoying I'm sure but what about people with 5:4 screens like mine ? Mahoosive black bars :(.

The game is still quite good though. I'd rate it 8/10, which is high for an EA game :p.

Admittedly it's rather repetitive. However, with the style of content i never really find it really boring. call me rather boring, but the levels make the most use of the repetitive mechanics very well

I dig it.

Admittedly I thought the world was going to be more open ended. Trial and error doesn't bother me much because the check points are 'mostly' evenly placed. Combat is a non issue because I just run away...

Other pluses include the low spec requirement - it still looks pretty on my mid spec rig. The casual style of play also suits me. I usually just play a single level and am happy to continue the story another day. I doubt I'll replay the game, but with so many triple A titles out recently I'm not going to be short on choice!

I think it was over hyped like most new games these days which then turn out to be a disappointment as people are expecting so much.

A lot of good games are slated for this reason imo.

That's peoples own fault though.
I never over look forward to an EA game anymore no matter how good it sounds...

And therefore, Mirror's Edge pleasantly surprised me :).

Expect rubbish, and if it isn't, then you're in for a treat :).

I do like the concept but it could definitely be improved. Main areas:

- actually make the free running 'free'! So far I have found there is actually only 1 route.

- the combat is rubbish, so I find I am mostly running away.

But overall its pretty good fun. :D
