Why does my brain stop working in the evening?

I know a lot of you folks are night owls so it's strange that I have the opposite issue... When it gets to around 8pm, my brain sort of...just shuts off! I can't compile a decent email, forum post, I can't think about or solve any work related issues intelligently... my head gets sore at the prospect!

I have quite a demanding job which probably answers the question, I need to be 100% on the ball from the minute I jump in the car in the morning to the minute I get home. No time to rest, no time to shut my brain down and go into auto pilot.

I have a lot of other work/projects that need doing but I'm so utterly ineffective in the evenings, it's unreal.

I was the total opposite as a teenager, I would stay up until 5 in the morning doing projects. Now, if I want anything done effectively, I get up at the crack of dawn, get the previous evenings tasks out of the way(often 10x quicker) before I go to work.

Anyone else experience this?

I can't compile a decent...forum post

I suffer from this, except it's permanent and continuous.

Can you concentrate if you're on annual leave? If so I would hazard a guess that it's nothing really to do with the timing and your job is breaking you.

Yet posts a perfectly good, excellent grammar post at 21:57.

happens to me also, for this reason, anything with a high priority is dealt with in the morning.
If i really need to continue working hard for the afternoon, i take a nap during lunch. No longer than 15 mins. This greatly increases my production in the afternoon. (but i have to plan this as coffee in the morning hours stops this!)

The above may only work for the Japanese though.

Stress, anxiety, age, routine, illness, diet. Brain generally works by association so maybe it's got used to shutting down at this time of night. We are personal spirits inside a machine.

I've found similar. The problem of having a mentally demanding job is that it severely limits the mental capacity I have for time outside work. As a result I'm doing my best to find ways to reduce the load on my brain during the day, even if just a little. I believe there is also recent research pointing to constant overload of the brain not being good for you in terms of the risk of things like dementia.

You generally have 8-10 good solid working hours in you for a day, if you spend 8 of those at work and the other 2 doing things like cooking, cleaning etc then no wonder you're flagging.

Its a shame really these days that workplaces are happy to thrash their employees for the sake of productivity, even telling them being "stretched" is a good thing, the simple answer is i doubt its a good thing in the long run, i'd admit to being an advocate of a 6 hour 6 day working week or taking a 20% paycut for working 4 days a week.

Yup ratio of 5/2 is balls.

Apologies for hijacking the thread, but I recently realised I get hungry if I haven't eaten for a few hours - does anyone else get that?

If I eat loads then I find that a few hours later I need to take a dump - anyone else have that happen to them?

Welcome to getting old.

Some people here, they crack me up :D I also like how apparently your job is the most demanding job ever. Are you a highly successful entrepreneur? Tell us more!

Wait, what? Where did i mention being a highly successful entrepreneur? I said i have a highly demanding job and im responsible for a lot of things and a lot of things going right all whilst bring pestered by my staff/colleagues/supliers from morning till night... Is that unreasoble to put forward as a potential reason for being tired?

My question was more around it only being when i get home that my brain goes into stupid mode.

@Caged: i get very lazy on annual leave...when i give myself the time yo have annual leave... despite trying to get other things off the ground. I do find it very hard to mentally 'switch off' though!

What do you chaps do as a way of reducing the load on your brain?

Maybe i should eat/drink more of specific foods? Maybe my brain just assosciates my house with sleep time?

Its just all very frustrating as i use to achieve a lot more during my evengs, this job mightve taken its toll.

Im mid 20s

If you have to set your alarm before 0600 on work days, you could easily be wiped out at 2000.
