Why does my connection go slow when someone is on wireless?

So our connection has speeds of up 1.2mb a second. Pretty slow by todays standards,. but physically can't get faster until BT decide to built us some cable or fiber.

Anyway,. my laptop can only download at highest 250kb/s which is pretty slow,. but for some reason why someone is on my laptop it slows my down to like 100kb/s and when i'm gaming it shoots my ping up to like 700. How does it affect me so badly?
Can i cap any wireless signals at a certain speed so my physical connection isn't as badly impacted?

Thanks?

Old laptop on 802.11g or older?
Is the laptop on the fringes of the wireless range?
I would hazard a guess that the laptop isn't getting a clear signal and the data packets are being received corrupted and therefore being repeatedly re-requested thus flooding the network.
See if it improves at all when the laptop is near the wireless access point.

I think it's that,. the laptop is a good 2 - 4 years old.
And the laptop is usually being used downstairs,. and wifi is upstairs in my bedroom.
If that is the reason,. is there anything i can do?

Whoever else is using the connection using torrents or something? or even their PC infected with some malware thats rinsing the connection?

I had a very similar problem earlier this year. (thread link above)
The thing that cured it for me was an ISP swap that prompted an Engineer call out,
which led to a fault on my line being repaired and the b/band speeds doubling.

mckevstah, are you sure that your line is giving you max speeds?

( this may not be the case for you, but here's my story anyway)

I was told for 10 years that my line was fine and was being given max supported speeds, by 3 different ISP's..
and the BT Wholesale test said all was good too.
But I had my suspicions after seeing some strange faster than
normal speeds during the DLM stage of joining a new ISP.

I started posting my router stats on various different web sites,
asking for experts to give me approx speeds relevant to my noise margin and line attenuation etc. etc.

All replies said I should be getting more speed.

I bit the bullet and over 4 straight days I phoned my new ISP asking for an engineer visit, eventually they sent him.

He found a fault on my line at the exchange and fixed it within an hour.
( Free of charge as fault was at the exchange and not in my house)

My connection went from 1.5/2.3Mbps fluctuating, to a stable 5Mbps solid all day everyday,
which, in conjunction with a new router, solved my laptops bandwidth hogging problem.

I'd test the laptop upstairs and see if signal weakness is the issue.
You could also try an openreach vdsl interstitial faceplate if you have an nte5 master socket.
Is your router connected to your master socket?
