Why does my CPU speed drop?

Hey guys, bought an overclocked bundle the other day and in the bios it always says my speed is 4Ghz, however when i use CPU-Z straight after booting it says 4Ghz however after about 1 minute it drops to 2.2 Ghz? Any ideas?

Power saving, simple as.

CPU isnt being used so it down clocks to save you pennies on your electric bill. Helps prolong the life of the equipment too

Ahhhh i see, so if i put it under load i'll likely see it return to 4ghz? That's pretty damn clever.

Really regretting buying an overclocked bundle now.. Had nothing but problems with it so far =/

Tried to run Prime95... It lasted about 5 seconds before a blue screen arrived... Completely gutted with this =( Even if i send it back i'll have to pay delivery on it again o.0 which isn't going to be cheap.. Maybe i'll just turn off the oc and try myself even though i bought this to not have to try myself ^^

Well i've turned the overclock off and it's obviously stable now =P Meh... They didn't even put any thermal paste on my cpu =( so i had to use the stock cooler for the i7 =P instead of the fenrir o.0

Seems like quite a few of these overclocked bundles have these stability issues as I can gather from posts in the forum. The best bet is to send a webnote and not meddle with anything for the time being, OCUK should sort you out!

Another thing you can do is to check the temperatures.

I never got time to check the temps as soon as the Prime95 test started it was a blue screen! =P

be aware if u do it yourself the ocuk warranty will be gone

Well all i've done is pressed the load fail safe option in bios... I assume they won't tell me i've voided the warranty for that? I want to be able to use the PC i have bought atleast o.0

I posted in the customer service forum and got a reply pretty promptly! Basically they asked me what the rest of my system was and if i'm using the stock cooler or not (I am indeed using the stock cooler because i was under the impression that i was getting some thermal paste! o.0) I dont know whether to keep it though, the fact that my pc loads up fine but doesn't POST at all... Is really unsettling...

I really hate to say this, and I don't mean to aim this specifically at the OP, but this is what happens when you sell equipment that requires a reasonable level of enthusiast knowledge to those who don't have it.

Well even if they sold it to someone who was an enthusiast wouldn't they be ****ed knowing they'd paid a premium for something that wasn't stable? Even if they could make it stable themselves?

i get the impression from reading this thread...

1. you are using a stock cooler on a 4ghz overclock
2. you expected us to preinstall your thermal paste

can you clarify if you are using the stock cooler at the overclock settings?
this is an exceptionally bad idea

thermal paste is goopy and horrible, it would be smeared all over every capacitor of your motherboard if we were to install it before it shipped.
this would cause it to short out the board.

1. Yes i am using the stock cooler on my CPU because no thermal paste was included in my bundle... So i had to really =/
2. Yes i did, but now that's not what's bothering me, I'm more annoyed about the fact that I dont have any thermal paste now o.0

The forums are not for customers support queries, since you paid the premium OCuK are the guys to help you.

Fair play they should have sent you out some thermal paste with the bundle but again that's for you to take up with them.

Also are you sure there is not any thermal paste included with your cooler, some heat-sinks I've brought come with some.

I'll try and get it sorted tomorrow i suppose, i'm leaning to having it sent back though =(

I got the paste and installed the fenrir heatsink, made no difference... Still can't survive one test of prime!

Try re sitting the CPU cooler to see if that will make a difference

Nah, gonna send it back i think, I've like JUST fitted it i know it's on right =P I keep getting the blue screen of Death every time i try prime 95
