Why does my PC switch back on after doing a shutdown?

It just doesn't want to be turned off... It wants to live... Must be some new Intel AI system ;)

Is a strange problem though! Maybe it's some strange fault with the motherboard itself...

Try disconnectinh EVERYTHING from the motherboard (including graphics card if you have onboard just for test purposes) - just leave cpu, and memory then try it like that... Have you got another CPU you could test with to try to rule that out?

The motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-GC330UD so it has a atom 330 CPU soldered to the board!

Tried having nothing connected! Also tried only connecting the power sw cable to the board!

Lost

Check your mobo is not shorting on the case in any way. Had an extra standoff screwed in which was shorting against the mobo and causing a restart after shutting down. Also check the back IO shield.

This was my last resort and I just took the whole pc apart and set it up on the table with only PSU, memory and hardisk attached. Switched on machine by bridging pins.

Booted machine into ubuntu, did a shutdown and guess what. Yep it started up again.

Powering of with power button also doesnt work it switches on again.

Seems like I have tried everything. A dodgy switching on after shutdown motherboard it seems!

Yeah, would seem like a motherboard fault... strange and really annoying! looks like it'll be the switch on the psu becoming your new best friend lol hit that before it starts to fire up again :) not ideal but does the job

If you ever hear 'Are you still there...?' in the background just as you are leaving the room, be very afraid...
