Why does PC think there's less RAM?

My mums ancient PC is meant to have 256 of RAM, but it'll only admit to having 192. I've heard of a little RAM being lost, but isn't that a bit much? Any way I can improve it?

Did you just buy it from someone? What I mean is have you actually opened it up and looked at the RAM modules you've got in there? It sounds to me like you've got 1*128mb + 1*64mb in there in which case you've been screwed.

Could it not have 64 meg of memory allocated to graphics.

Clever man - it's almost certainly this.

You can probably change the amount of RAM allocated to video in the BIOS.
