Why does Steam sometimes not connect?

I am getting very irritated at Steam because sometimes it can't seem to connect to Online mode, especially now that if it happens I can't play Modern Warfare 2...

When I boot the computer up, it says that Steam cannot connect to the online. Then when I try to startup a Steam game nothing happens for ten seconds then it says 'Steam is updating' and no matter how long I leave it, nothing happens. :mad:

Please does someone have a solution to this problem? :confused:

let steam update? sounds like the client is behind, force update?

edit: ah sometimes it does this, you need to let it get to a % and once if stops for a bit quit, then do it again and it will get further, etc etc

I get this as well with FM10, annoyed me so much that I uninstalled FM10 and reinstalled it without stupid Steam, now I can play it when I want to without Steam trying to stop me

My client is not behind, because most of the time Steam actually does work perfectly.

It's just that sometimes Steam won't connect atall...

stable DSL connection? any times (like 5pm-7pm) that it kicks up a fuss? what line speed you have?

My download speed is 893kbps and my upload speed is 976kbps. (Measured by 'Aduit my PC' Broadband speed test).
