Why does the free space on my Boot drive vary so much?

My 25GB C: is my boot drive with my OS and program files on it and the amount of free space varies from 3GB to 300MB for no apparent reason. Might it be the pagefile?

This is on Vista Ultimate 64bit with 4GB RAM

Page file, temp files, hibernation, recycle bin? Could a number of things...

I had a problem the other day when I lost 5GB of free space after doing a de-frag. Just noticed that 3GB of it has come back in the past hour though, weird.

Likely to be either page file or hibernation.

Are you running vista?

I don't have hibernation enabled at the moment

disable system restore

use the windows disk cleanup tool

install and run this http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds/downloading-slim

-untick the optoins for cleaning cookies & saved password forms (and history) in IE/Firefox/Opera first

Cheers, had previously done the last 2 things and now have disabled system restore
