Why does the UK hate cyclists?

To be honest cyclists that use lights inappropriately annoy the hell out of me too. Though let's not pretend that the issue is just a cyclist one. There are plenty of drivers driving around with inappropriately bright/angled headlights too. They're just as blissfully unaware of the dazzling effect they have on others as the cyclists that stupidly angle their lights upwards or run lights without appropriate lenses.

Pretty sure most people think the raise headlights knob is just for seeing further these days. Does my head in when the road in front of me disappears because someone's lights are too high :(.

Must be illegal .

Drivers with fog lights on at all times, anyone?

Or daytime running lights at night, or sometimes the drl, foglights dip beam combo

Seems its a new car thing, its always brand new land rovers or peugeots are the worst offenders, with the occasional vw bora with the standard mods: smoke emitter, suspension removal, scaffolding pipe exhaust, yellow tinted foglights and a pair of small pulsars where the dip beams should be.

The thing that gets me about cyclists doing it is some have the light so high it must be utterly useless for seeing the road, which one would think would be the point of such a bright light.

It's just as annoying for us cyclists when you come across a cyclist coming towards you with a setup like this. The other one that blinds me is when the other cyclist has a helmet mounted light and they look at me. Thanks mate, now I can't see anything! I have a bright light setup for obvious reasons but as said previously it is angled down a fair amount to prevent dazzling others. It just makes riding unlit paths a little more interesting. What I really want is a manufacturer like Hope to identify this as a problem then put a front light out on the market that has a dipped and main beam function.

If you're going to insult please be accurate.

Thinnest are 18mm, but those aren't common. 23mm are the thinnest modern race tyres now.

Panaracer XC Firepro 2.1" are where it's at. Loads of extra resistance to build up those leg muscles. Also when up at speed they are quite noisy on the road so people hear me coming :D

So why don't you want to cycle slower, say 10mph like the Dutch Von mentioned, and arrive at work in your normal clothes
Normal clothes do not last very long you take the crutch out on a pair of jeans - so more economic to buy dedicated clothing
(but need somewhere to change or arrive at office early)

contact patch could be ~10mm wide though.

Ok, but it was whichever mod suggested you would be violating the ban, not me. I have no interest in electric bikes, save overtaking them under my own steam, so I’m not super familiar with the rules.

I see, the lack of a question mark at the end of your post turned it into a statement. So it's the Werewolf fellow who is mistaken then. I wonder if they still have those dreadful little low power cars drink drivers could turn to in France? I suspect not.

Yes, it was more a musing or question than a statement. I should have used a question mark, or an ellipsis, or possibly both...?

Must admit I've only ever been dazzled by one cyclist who apparently had attached the sun to his bike. Put my car headlights to shame.

Side note. Are flashing front lights legal? I can understand rear ones but front seem to defeat the purpose when they flash.

CREE lights, they're glorious. So glorious that they should be angled downwards to avoid blinding oncoming road users with your burning glory. I'm as annoyed by poorly angled bike lights as I am by car drivers keeping their highbeams on because they haven't twigged that cyclist need to be able to see too.

Why use knobbly tyre on road, 2.1" is too wide for purely road as well

I don't know about the legalities. A single flashing front light is fine a guess when in a low light, normal light conditions, where the cyclist could be seen without the light. But when at night, especially on unlit roads then its a definite no no from me. I'll always have at least one light on static so that I don't disappear from sight for a second.

They are legal, providing they adhere to certain standards, I forget which. Those standards do permit flashing lights. Unfortunately legit approved lights from proper manufacturers cost a fortune, so a lot of people instead opt for the eBay cheapo drop-shipped-from-China MegaLumen UltraSun FaceMelter 3000 lights, which are not approved for anything.

Why do some cyclist have helmet mounted lights? Are they expecting to go mining on their journey?
Small helmet lights are fine if it’s just a little light. You can get them with white on the front and red on the back.

The full on head mounted torch types are so you can see where your head is pointed i.e. where you’re looking. However, as said, that’s not ideal if it’s super bright and you’re looking directly at people.

as a road cyclist, I don't know either, unless they have the webcam too, so it's a movie.

The percentage of cyclists/commuters who invest in multiple/expensive rear lights as opposed to a hi-viz band/top surprises me;
imhop 50% of them, I assume none of them ever sit in the front seat of a car at night or day

I assume you cannot have stroboscopic/higher-frequency rear lights (like police use on the continent)

They are used for off road riding.

high vis is not as effective as a good light. I never wore high vis clothing when I cycled daily and never had any issues, did always make sure to have decent lights on.

I am blinded by cars daily when driving, high beams, fogs etc always silly drivers driving with cars in their sun mode. I am genuinely confused as to why drivers hate on cyclists so much, like literally, I drive near surrey daily and I see maybe 2-3 cyclists a day. It's a joke to get annoyed by something like that, some people really need a slap to reality.
