Cyclists should pay for what, road upkeep? They do, through all the taxes they pay.Cyclists should pay.

They don't have to pay insurance for being on the roads on their bikes though do they? They are largely unaccountable for their actions, whereas motorists are.
- Run a red light? No problem.
- Zoom over a Zebra crossing without stopping? No problem.
- Attack another motorists or their car? No problem... just ride away.
- Ride two or three abreast on narrow roads? No problem (until they're moving at 5mph on a 70mph road on a blind bend and someone hits them).
Make them accountable and I'll stop disliking them.

Yes, motorists are totally accountable for running red lights and zebra crossings and so these things never happen and I definitely didn’t see three cars running red lights on my ride to work this morning.
Riding two abreast is perfectly legal, stop crying about it. I’ll not defend three, that’s fair comment.
I’m not sure how often cyclists are attacking cars or motorists. I doubt it happens very often, but perhaps you can tell me otherwise.
And in a car:
Run a red light resulting in no collision and no policeman around to witness it - No problem
Zoom over a zebra crossing not hitting anyone and no policeman around to witness it - No problem
Car hits parked car - No witness, no problem just drive away, happens frequently.
Unlikely to be a 70mph limit with a blind bend and if there were you wouldn't be driving that fast as the bend is blind - mute point.
Everyone should be accountable for their own actions whilst using the road sadly many people daily get away with breaking the rules regardless of vehicle type
I'd be curious as to what the statistics are percentage wise of cyclists who flout the rules compared to drivers that do.As a cyclist, you are equally responsible for looking after your own safety as motorists are for ensuring they don't run you off the road. If you are STUPID enough to ride two abreast on country roads, don't be surprised if someone comes around a corner at or under the speed limit and is unable to stop, or is totally miffed off at having to take evasive action to avoid muppets with no regard for anyone else. If that motorist is speeding and driving dreadfully, then they are equally as stupid as you for not looking out for your own safety.
Lot's of things are legal, but not a good idea. You can get a gun legally and you could legally hold it to your own head whilst loaded... sane people would not do this.
yes I am well aware of how stupid and dangerous it can be. I am not saying that just because it is legal then everyone should do it. But cyclists are just as accountable for their actions as car drivers are.

Motorists are far far easier to identify than some Rambo style'd lycra lout with no registration number or insurance records. That is a fact plain and simple.
The government doesn't know that John from Slough likes to ride to work and his tricked out Team Sky moron bike, but he does know what cars I own, whether they are taxed and insured, and with CCTV across the majority of major cities / towns / villiages, and motorways, can work out when and where I've been travelling.
Misread - they are not as accountable.
All cyclists above a certain age should need to tax their bikes - let's face it this would be free, as it is for low emission vehicles, so no additional costs. This would at least force cyclists to make themselves known to the authorities.
Every cyclist should have to have a licence - the same as motor cyclists and car drivers need before they can use the roads.
Insurance should be MANDATORY for all road users, including cyclists. If you run into the back of my car, or damage it in anyway that is no fault of mine, I should not be footing that bill.
Finally, a system needs to put in place similar to number plates to ensure all systems that keep motorists in check apply to cyclists too. The chap earlier who said motorists can run red lights... true; however, if that light has a camera attached, they can't without being appropriately punished. If you're a cyclist... WAHAY GOOD DAY!
These measures for motorists keep the overwhelming majority in line on the roads. The same cannot be said for cyclists.

You do realise that as a car driver it’s your responsibility not to be driving so fast on country lanes that you can’t stop in time in the event of meeting another motorist, tractor, horse rider, cyclist, flock of sheep, misplaced cow, surprisingly large badger, etc?
Let's just reduce the speed limit to 10mph and have done with it.
Your point is valid in that motorists have a responsibility to ensure they are driving appropriately, without acknowledging that ALL road users have a responsibility to act responsibility to ensure their and everyone else's safety. Riding two abreast, or even riding in the middle of a lane at a much lower speed than the limit for whatever road you are in is irresponsible in the extreme.
